His observations dealt with free trade in the East Indies, the Dutch Republic's military conflict with the Portuguese and Spanish in Asia, and the legal and moral grounds for attacking and plundering Portuguese and Spanish mercantile shipping. This book considers the background to the treatises, their content and significance, and what Grotius actually knew about Southeast Asian politics and Portuguese institutions of trade and diplomacy when he wrote them. Grotius' work on the freedom of the sea was a cornerstone in his enduring reputation as one of the founders of modern international law. The present book provides a valuable resource for historians of Southeast Asia and for students of international relations, political theory, maritime history and public international law. 606 $aHistory / Asia / Southeast Asia$2bisacsh 606 $aHistory 615 7$aHistory / Asia / Southeast Asia 615 0$aHistory. 700 $aBorschberg$b Peter$0779663 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910645984903321 996 $aHugo Grotius, the Portuguese, and Free Trade in the East Indies$93007926 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05098nam 22007815 450 001 9910984585303321 005 20250303100749.0 010 $a9789819628568$b(electronic bk.) 010 $z9789819628551 024 7 $a10.1007/978-981-96-2856-8 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31927699 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31927699 035 $a(CKB)37736041600041 035 $a(DE-He213)978-981-96-2856-8 035 $a(OCoLC)1505734881 035 $a(EXLCZ)9937736041600041 100 $a20250301d2025 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aMobilizing Financial Resources of Urban Local Government in Bangladesh /$fby Muhammad Sayadur Rahman, Shamima Akter 205 $a1st ed. 2025. 210 1$aSingapore :$cSpringer Nature Singapore :$cImprint: Palgrave Macmillan,$d2025. 215 $a1 online resource (260 pages) 225 1 $aPolitical Science and International Studies 311 08$aPrint version: Rahman, Muhammad Sayadur Mobilizing Financial Resources of Urban Local Government in Bangladesh Singapore : Palgrave Macmillan,c2025 9789819628551 327 $aChapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Theoretical and Analytical Framework -- Chapter 3: City Corporation (CC): An Analysis of Evolution, Structure, Functions, Election, and Finance -- Chapter 4: Financial Resource Mobilization of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC): Analysis of Empirical Findings -- Chapter 5: Financial Resource Mobilization of Gazipur City Corporation: Analysis of Empirical Findings -- Chapter 6: Conclusion. 330 $aThis book explains the dynamics of revenue generation and allocation reality of city corporations in Bangladesh. It explores the state of five consecutive years of revenue generation and expenditure allocations of Dhaka North City Corporation and Gazipur City Corporation along with a discussion of to what extent the City Corporation is allowed to enjoy fiscal autonomy through the Local Government (City Corporation) Act of 2009 to generate and manage its local resources. It also finds out the institutional blocks/challenges that the city corporation faces in the process of revenue generation and mobilization, even with the existence of a solid legislative foundation. Central to the book's focus is the resource mobilizing scenario (generation and allocation of revenue) of City Corporation over the past five consecutive years. It suggests some approaches that will serve as valuable resources for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to take steps for strengthening the finance base of urban local government through revisiting and redefining revenue generation and allocation strategies.
