Aber weder die Beziehungen noch sein Belgien- und Niederlandebild sind bis heute erschöpfend erforscht worden. Diese Untersuchung will Hoffmanns Beziehungen zu den Niederlanden und zum nachmaligen Belgien sowie das Netzwerk, das er dort aufbaute, anhand seiner Korrespondenz und der Akten zu seiner Person rekonstruieren. Hoffmann schildert ein diffuses Bild der Nachbarn, das von einer deutsch-nationalen Einstellung geprägt ist. Zu fragen ist, ob sein positives Verhalten und seine negativen Äußerungen lediglich ideologisch motiviert waren und vorwiegend daher rührten, daß er, wie viele deutsche Intellektuelle im 19. Jahrhundert, versuchte, die Niederlande und Belgien einem deutschen Staatsgefüge einzugliedern, oder ob er vielmehr als Kulturvermittler zu gelten hat. Hoffmanns Briefwechsel umfaßt, soweit sich jetzt feststellen läßt, über 7000 Briefe, die hier erstmals in einem Verzeichnis erfaßt sind.
