D. Cohen's important and seminal work on the history and development of Judaism between 164 BCE to 300 CE. Cohen's synthesis of religion, literature, and history offers deep insight into the nature of Judaism at this key period, including the relationship between Jews and Gentiles, the function of Jewish religion in the larger community, and the development of normative Judaism and other Jewish sects. Cohen offers students more than just history, but an understanding of the social and cultural context of Judaism as it developed into the formative period of rabbinic Judaism. This new edition includes a brand-new chapter on the parting of ways between Jews and Christians in the second century CE. From the Maccabees to the Mishnah remains the clearest introduction to the era that shaped Judaism and provided the context for early Christianity."-from Amazon.com 606 $aJudaism$xHistory$yPost-exilic period, 586 B.C.-210 A.D 606 $aJews$xHistory$y168 B.C.-135 A.D 615 0$aJudaism$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xHistory 676 $a296.09/014 700 $aCohen$b Shaye J. At the latest since the postcolonial debate, we know that we need to ?test? our assumptions under radically different conditions. This book offers an extended perspective of local self-governance by examining cases from South Asia, Africa, and Latin America, together with a study of militias in the USA. The chapters present a wide variety of local actors who pursue different notions of order legitimized by local traditions based on hierarchy or deeply rooted communalism, Islamic theology, or grassroots democracy. Some local actors claim a state-like authority and challenge the territorial state. In such cases, there is no longer ?a shadow hierarchy? but opposition to the state. Different violent actors fight for supremacy, and the state is just one actor among others. The empirical studies presented in this book show how different kinds of local self-governance are combined with varieties of statehood, and thus contribute to an understanding of the notion of governance in a fundamental sense that goes beyond the special case of the OECD world. 410 0$aContributions to Political Science,$x2198-7297 606 $aComparative government 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aUrban policy 606 $aAsia$xPolitics and government 606 $aAmerica$xPolitics and government 606 $aAfrica$xPolitics and government 606 $aComparative Politics 606 $aGovernance and Government 606 $aUrban Policy 606 $aAsian Politics 606 $aAmerican Politics 606 $aAfrican Politics 615 0$aComparative government. 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 0$aUrban policy. 615 0$aAsia$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aAmerica$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aAfrica$xPolitics and government. 615 14$aComparative Politics. 615 24$aGovernance and Government. 615 24$aUrban Policy. 615 24$aAsian Politics. 615 24$aAmerican Politics. 615 24$aAfrican Politics. 676 $a320.8 700 $aNeubert$b Dieter$01062688 702 $aLauth$b Hans-Joachim 702 $aMohamad-Klotzbach$b Christoph 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910635392103321 996 $aLocal Self-Governance and Varieties of Statehood$92998051 997 $aUNINA
