Although Alexander and those living with her insisted that she was perfectly well, the official solicitor took control of her home and money, evicted her "friends," and hired a live-in companion to watch over her. Alexander remained legally incapable for the next thirty years. In the mid-twentieth century, Alexander was one of about thirty thousand people in England and Wales who were, at any time, legally "incapable" and under the auspices of what is now the Court of Protection. Focusing on the period between the 1920s and the 1960s, Looking After Miss Alexander explains the workings of the court, using Alexander's unusual case to consider the complexities of this aspect of mental health law. Drawing on Court of Protection archives - some of which were made publicly available for the first time in 2019 - and micro-historical methods, Janet Weston also highlights the role of chance, subjectivity, and uncertainty in shaping how events unfolded then, and the stories we tell about those events today. An engaging and accessible history of mental capacity law, Looking After Miss Alexander examines ideas of citizenship and welfare, gender and vulnerability, care and control, and the role of the state. It also offers reflections on historical research and writing itself. 410 0$aStates, people, and the history of social change. 606 $aMental illness$xPrevention 606 $aMental health 615 0$aMental illness$xPrevention. 615 0$aMental health. 676 $a616.89 700 $aWeston$b Janet$0935115 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910634062403321 996 $aLooking After Miss Alexander$93012893 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04636nam 2200649 a 450 001 9910784354403321 005 20230120004408.0 010 $a1-281-03654-4 010 $a9786611036546 010 $a0-08-055112-2 035 $a(CKB)1000000000349838 035 $a(EBL)311499 035 $a(OCoLC)476098901 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000215788 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11198984 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000215788 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10194481 035 $a(PQKB)10732286 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL311499 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10190093 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL103654 035 $a(CaSebORM)9780750679862 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC311499 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000349838 100 $a20070424d2007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aOptimizing and testing WLANs$b[electronic resource] $eproven techniques for maximum performance /$fby Tom Alexander 205 $a1st edition 210 $aAmsterdam ;$aBoston $cElsevier Newnes$dc2007 215 $a1 online resource (268 p.) 225 1 $aCommunications engineering series 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-7506-7986-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 245-248) and index. 327 $aFront cover; Optimizing and Testing WLANs; Copyright page; Contents; Preface; Introduction; Chapter 1: IEEE 802.11 WLAN Systems; 1.1 IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks; 1.2 WLAN Standards Today; 1.3 Inside WLAN Devices; 1.4 The RF Layer; Chapter 2: Metrology, Test Instruments, and Processes; 2.1 Metrology: the Science of Measurement; 2.2 The Nomenclature of Measurement; 2.3 Measurement Quality Factors; 2.4 The WLAN Engineer's Toolbox; 2.5 Test Setups and Test Processes; 2.6 Repeatability; Chapter 3: WLAN Test Environments; 3.1 Wired vs. Wireless; 3.2 Types of Environments 327 $a3.3 Outdoor and Indoor OTA3.4 Chambered OTA Testing; 3.5 Conducted Test Setups; 3.6 Repeatability; Chapter 4: Physical Layer Measurements; 4.1 Types of PHY Layer Measurements; 4.2 Transmitter Tests; 4.3 Receiver Tests; 4.4 Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing; 4.5 System Performance Tests; 4.6 Getting the DUT to Respond; Chapter 5: Protocol Testing; 5.1 An Introduction to Protocol Testing; 5.2 Conformance and Functional Testing; 5.3 Interoperability Testing; 5.4 Performance Testing; 5.5 Standardized Benchmark Testing; Chapter 6: Application-Level Measurements; 6.1 System-level Measurements 327 $a6.2 Application Traffic Mixes6.3 VoIP Testing; 6.4 Video and Multimedia; 6.5 Relevance and Repeatability; Chapter 7: WLAN Manufacturing Test; 7.1 The WLAN Manufacturing Flow; 7.2 Manufacturing Test Setups; 7.3 Radio Calibration; 7.4 Programming; 7.5 Functional and System Testing; 7.6 Failure Patterns; Chapter 8: Installation Test; 8.1 Enterprise WLANs; 8.2 Hot-spots; 8.3 The Site Survey; 8.4 Propagation Analysis and Prediction; 8.5 Maintenance and Monitoring; Chapter 9: Testing MIMO Systems; 9.1 What is MIMO?; 9.2 The IEEE 802.11n PHY; 9.3 A New PLCP/MAC Layer; 9.4 The MIMO Testing Challenge 327 $a9.5 Channel Emulation9.6 Testing 802.11n MIMO Devices; Appendix A: A Standards Guide; A.1 FCC Part 15; A.2 IEEE 802.11; A.3 Wi-FiŽ Alliance; A.4 CTIA; A.5 IETF BMWG; Appendix B: Selected Bibliography; Index; A; B; C; D; E; F; G; H; I; J; L; M; N; O; P; Q; R; S; T; U; V; W 330 $aAs WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) become increasingly common, it's becoming vital to be able to test them for proper performance and to optimize their operation. This book, written by a member of the IEEE committee that develops WLAN standards, is the first book addressing that need. It covers test equipment and methods for the RF (wireless) and physical layers of WLAN, protocols, the application layer, and manufacturing testing. The emphasis throughout is on underlying engineering principles along with modern metrics and methodologies, ensuring this book gives both a solid theoretical b 410 0$aCommunications engineering series. 606 $aWireless LANs$xSecurity measures 606 $aLocal area networks (Computer networks)$xSecurity measures 615 0$aWireless LANs$xSecurity measures. 615 0$aLocal area networks (Computer networks)$xSecurity measures. 676 $a004.6/8 700 $aAlexander$b Tom$01511553 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910784354403321 996 $aOptimizing and testing WLANs$93744904 997 $aUNINA
