Recently our interpretation of the Holocaust has been the center of bitter controversies, from debates over Paul de Man's collaborationist journalism and Martin Heidegger's Nazi past to attempts by some historians to downplay the Holocaust's significance. A major voice in current historiographical discussions, Dominick LaCapra brings a new clarity to these issues as he examines the intersections between historical events and the theory through which we struggle to understand them. In a series of essays-three published here for the first time-LaCapra explores the problems faced by historians, critics, and thinkers who attempt to grasp the Holocaust. He considers the role of canon formation and the dynamic of revisionist historiography, as well as critically analyzing responses to the discovery of de Man's wartime writings. He also discusses Heidegger's involvement with National Socialism, and he sheds light on postmodernist obsessions with such concepts as loss, agora, dispossession, deferred meaning, and the sublime. Throughout, LaCapra demonstrates that psychoanalysis is not merely a psychology of the individual but that its concepts have sociocultural dimensions and can help us perceive the relationship between the present and the past. Many of our efforts to comprehend the Holocaust, he shows, continue to suffer from the traumatizing effects of its events and require a "working through" of that trauma if we are to gain a more profound understanding of the meaning of the Holocaust. 410 0$aACLS Humanities E-Book. 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xHistoriography 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xHistoriography. 676 $a940.53/18/072 700 $aLaCapra$b Dominick$f1939-$0122081 712 02$aAmerican Council of Learned Societies. 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996247903103316 996 $aRepresenting the Holocaust$92363486 997 $aUNISA LEADER 01722nam 2200421Ia 450 001 996395494403316 005 20210104171732.0 035 $a(CKB)3810000000015909 035 $a(EEBO)2240866228 035 $a(OCoLC)ocn318212069e 035 $a(OCoLC)318212069 035 $a(EXLCZ)993810000000015909 100 $a20090410d1697 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 10$aSir Evan Lloyd baronet, and Dame Mary his wife, Sydney Godolphin Esquire, and Susan his wife [brace] appellants$b[electronic resource] $eSir Richard Carew baronet, an infant, the son and heir of Sir John Carew baronet, deceas'd [brace] respondent : the respondent, Sir Richard Carew's case 210 $a[S.l. $cs.n.$d1697?] 215 $a1 sheet ([2] p.) 300 $aDate of publication suggested by text. 300 $aDocket title: Sir Richard Carew's case. 300 $aReproduction of original in: Folger Shakespeare Library. 330 $aeebo-0055 606 $aEstates (Law)$zGreat Britain$vCases$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aInheritance and succession$zGreat Britain$vCases$vEarly works to 1800 606 $aLand titles$zGreat Britain$vEarly works to 1800 608 $aBroadsides$zEngland$y17th century$2rbgenr 615 0$aEstates (Law) 615 0$aInheritance and succession 615 0$aLand titles 700 $aCarew$b Richard$cSir,$fd. 1703 or 4.$01008061 701 $aLloyd$b Evan$cSir,$fca. 1654-1700.$01008062 801 0$bUMI 801 1$bUMI 801 2$bUMI 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996395494403316 996 $aSir Evan Lloyd baronet, and Dame Mary his wife, Sydney Godolphin Esquire, and Susan his wife appellants$92324187 997 $aUNISA LEADER 01101cam0-2200313---450 001 990005535220403321 005 20230302145732.0 035 $a000553522 035 $aFED01000553522 035 $a(Aleph)000553522FED01 035 $a000553522 100 $a19990604d1939----km-y0itay50------ba 101 0 $afre 105 $aa---b---001yy 200 1 $aGuide-catalogue du Musée Guimet$eavec introductions concernant l'histoire, les religions et les arts des différents pays$fpar Odette Monod-Bruhi 210 $a[S.l.$cs.n]$d1939$eTours$gArrault et C. 215 $a217 p., 9 tav$cill.$d19 cm 300 $aIn testa al front.: Arts de l'Inde, Indochine, Java, Afghanistan, Asie Centrale, Tibet, Chine, Japon, Égypte 610 0 $aMuseo Guimet $aCatalogo 676 $a708.4361 702 1$aMonod-Bruhi,$bOdette 710 02$aMusée Guimet$c$0397687 801 0$aIT$bUNINA$gRICA$2UNIMARC 901 $aBK 912 $a990005535220403321 952 $a708.1 GUIM 01$bARCH.
