It offers an introduction to the development of spy fiction both in England and in the United States and explores the ways in which issues such as the atomic bomb, double agents, paranoia, propaganda and megalomania manifest themselves within the genre. The book examines the ongoing marginalization of women within spy fiction texts, exploring the idea that this unique period in global history is responsible for the active promotion and celebration of masculinity and male superiority. From James Bond to Jason Bourne, the book evaluates the ongoing enforcement of patriarchal ideas and oppressions that, in the name of national security and patriotic duty, have contributed to the development of a genre in which discrimination and bias continue to dominate. Sian MacArthur is an independent academic and researcher with literary interests in Gothic and science fiction, and historical interests in the Cold War. She is the author of Crime and the Gothic: Identifying the Gothic Footprint in Modern Crime Fiction (2011) and Gothic Science Fiction: 1818 to the Present (Palgrave 2015), and Re-defining the Gothic with Mo Haydar in The Palgrave Handbook of Contemporary Gothic. 410 0$aCrime Files,$x2947-8359 606 $aFiction 606 $aLiterature$xPhilosophy 606 $aFeminism and literature 606 $aLiterature, Modern$x20th century 606 $aWorld history 606 $aInternational relations$xHistory 606 $aCrime$xSociological aspects 606 $aFiction Literature 606 $aFeminist Literary Theory 606 $aTwentieth-Century Literature 606 $aWorld History, Global and Transnational History 606 $aDiplomatic and International History 606 $aCrime and Society 610 $aEnglish Literature 615 0$aFiction. 615 0$aLiterature$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aFeminism and literature. 615 0$aLiterature, Modern$x20th century. 615 0$aWorld history. 615 0$aInternational relations$xHistory. 615 0$aCrime$xSociological aspects. 615 14$aFiction Literature. 615 24$aFeminist Literary Theory. 615 24$aTwentieth-Century Literature. 615 24$aWorld History, Global and Transnational History. 615 24$aDiplomatic and International History. 615 24$aCrime and Society. 676 $a823.087209 676 $a823.087209 700 $aMacArthur$b Sian$01266062 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 912 $a9910629276403321 996 $aGender Roles and Political Contexts in Cold War Spy Fiction$92968612 997 $aUNINA
