Ironically, the earthquake brought down many "modern" structures built on the advice of foreign architects and engineers, while leaving certain traditional, wooden ones standing. This book, the first English-language history of modern Japanese earthquakes and earthquake science, considers the cultural and political ramifications of this and other catastrophic events on Japan's relationship with the West, with modern science, and with itself. Gregory Clancey argues that seismicity was both the Achilles' heel of Japan's nation-building project-revealing the state's western-style infrastructure to be surprisingly fragile-and a new focus for nativizing discourses which credited traditional Japanese architecture with unique abilities to ride out seismic waves. Tracing his subject from the Meiji Restoration to the Great Kant Earthquake of 1923 (which destroyed Tokyo), Clancey shows earthquakes to have been a continual though mercurial agent in Japan's self-fashioning; a catastrophic undercurrent to Japanese modernity. This innovative and absorbing study not only moves earthquakes nearer the center of modern Japan change-both materially and symbolically-but shows how fundamentally Japan shaped the global art, science, and culture of natural disaster. 606 $aEarthquakes$zJapan$xPsychological aspects 606 $aEarthquakes$xSocial aspects$zJapan 607 $aJapan$xCivilization$y1868-1945 610 $aarchitecture. 610 $abuilding codes. 610 $abuilding materials. 610 $abuilding project. 610 $aearthquake safety. 610 $aearthquake science. 610 $aearthquakes. 610 $aecology. 610 $aenvironment. 610 $aenvironmental history. 610 $agreat kant earthquake. 610 $agreat nobi earthquake. 610 $ainfrastructure. 610 $ajapan. 610 $ameiji restoration. 610 $ameiji. 610 $amodern japan. 610 $amodernity. 610 $anation. 610 $anatural disasters. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $aosaka. 610 $ascience. 610 $aseismic activity. 610 $aseismic waves. 610 $aself fashioning. 610 $astructural integrity. 610 $atokyo. 610 $atraditional architecture. 610 $awestern architecture. 610 $awooden building. 610 $awooden structures. 615 0$aEarthquakes$xPsychological aspects. 615 0$aEarthquakes$xSocial aspects 676 $a624.1762095209034 700 $aClancey$b Gregory K$01535555 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783668503321 996 $aEarthquake nation$93783865 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04517oas 22012493a 450 001 9910626146203321 005 20260127110524.0 011 $a1941-0026 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2028087-7 035 $a(OCoLC)44578045 035 $a(CONSER) 2008212903 035 $a(CKB)954925608890 035 $a(DE-599)2028087-7 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925608890 100 $a20000713a19979999 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aIEEE transactions on evolutionary computation $ea publication of the IEEE Neural Networks Council 210 $aNew York, NY $cInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers$dİ1997- 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aTitle from IEEExplore homepage (viewed Jul. 13, 2000). 311 08$a1089-778X 517 3 $aEvolutionary computation 517 3 $aTransactions on evolutionary computation 531 0 $aIEEE trans. evol. comput. 606 $aNeural networks (Computer science)$vPeriodicals 606 $aEvolutionary computation$vPeriodicals 606 $aNeural networks (Computer science)$vPeriodicals 606 $aEvolutionary computation$xPeriodicals 606 $aGenetic algorithms$xPeriodicals 606 $aEvolutionary programming (Computer science)$xPeriodicals 606 $aGenetic programming (Computer science)$xPeriodicals 606 $aRe?seaux neuronaux (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques 606 $aRe?seaux neuronaux a? structure e?volutive$xPe?riodiques 606 $aAlgorithmes ge?ne?tiques$xPe?riodiques 606 $aProgrammation e?volutive$xPe?riodiques 606 $aProgrammation ge?ne?tique (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques 606 $aRe?seaux neuronaux (Informatique)$vPe?riodiques 606 $aRe?seaux neuronaux a? structure e?volutive$vPe?riodiques 606 $aGenetic programming (Computer science)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00940075 606 $aGenetic algorithms$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00939996 606 $aEvolutionary programming (Computer science)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00917347 606 $aEvolutionary computation$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00917338 606 $aNeural networks (Computer science)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01036260 606 $aNeurale netwerken$2gtt 606 $aAlgoritmen$2gtt 606 $aComputermethoden$2gtt 606 $aZoekstrategiee?n$2gtt 606 $aProgrammeren (computers)$2gtt 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aNeural networks (Computer science) 615 0$aEvolutionary computation 615 0$aNeural networks (Computer science) 615 0$aEvolutionary computation$xPeriodicals. 615 0$aGenetic algorithms$xPeriodicals. 615 0$aEvolutionary programming (Computer science)$xPeriodicals. 615 0$aGenetic programming (Computer science)$xPeriodicals. 615 6$aRe?seaux neuronaux (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aRe?seaux neuronaux a? structure e?volutive$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aAlgorithmes ge?ne?tiques$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aProgrammation e?volutive$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aProgrammation ge?ne?tique (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aRe?seaux neuronaux (Informatique) 615 6$aRe?seaux neuronaux a? structure e?volutive 615 7$aGenetic programming (Computer science) 615 7$aGenetic algorithms. 615 7$aEvolutionary programming (Computer science) 615 7$aEvolutionary computation. 615 7$aNeural networks (Computer science) 615 17$aNeurale netwerken. 615 17$aAlgoritmen. 615 17$aComputermethoden. 615 17$aZoekstrategiee?n. 615 17$aProgrammeren (computers) 676 $a006 712 02$aInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 712 02$aIEEE Neural Networks Council 801 0$bNTD 801 1$bNTD 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bNSD 801 2$bU9S 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bUUM 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bS2H 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910626146203321 996 $aIEEE transactions on evolutionary computation$92425111 997 $aUNINA
