A perusal of the vast literary and iconographic repertory of Renaissance alchemy reveals that this late play is imbued with topoi, myths, and emblematic imagery coming from coeval alchemical, Paracelsian, and Hermetic sources. All the major symbols of alchemy are present in Shakespeare's play: the intertwined serpents of the caduceus, the chemical wedding, the filius philosophorum, and the so-called rex chymicus. This book also provides an in-depth survey of late Renaissance alchemy, Paracelsian medicine, and Hermetic culture in the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages. Importantly, it contends that The Winter's Tale, in symbolically retracing the healing pattern of the rota alchemica and in emphasising the Hermetic principles of unity and concord, glorifies King James's conciliatory attitude. 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine,$x2634-6443 606 $aEuropean literature$yRenaissance, 1450-1600 606 $aDrama 606 $aTheater$xHistory 606 $aGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aMedicine and the humanities 606 $aCulture$xStudy and teaching 606 $aEarly Modern and Renaissance Literature 606 $aDrama 606 $aTheatre History 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland 606 $aMedical Humanities 606 $aVisual Culture 615 0$aEuropean literature 615 0$aDrama. 615 0$aTheater$xHistory. 615 0$aGreat Britain$xHistory. 615 0$aMedicine and the humanities. 615 0$aCulture$xStudy and teaching. 615 14$aEarly Modern and Renaissance Literature. 615 24$aDrama. 615 24$aTheatre History. 615 24$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aMedical Humanities. 615 24$aVisual Culture. 676 $a822.33 676 $a822.33 700 $aZamparo$b Martina$01262352 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 912 $a9910616387003321 996 $aAlchemy, Paracelsianism, and Shakespeare's the Winter's Tale$92950609 997 $aUNINA
