Les poêles Godin. Deux expressions qui nous semblent familières, mais dont beaucoup ignorent quels liens les unissent. Les deux sont en effet l'?uvre d'un même industriel nommé Jean-Baptiste André Godin, qui rêvait de sortir définitivement l'ouvrier de la misère et de l'exploitation sociale. Le « Familistère » qu'il fit construire à Guise (Aisne, France) était ainsi un Palais offert à ses ouvriers, lieu de vie mais aussi d'initiation à la solidarité, au mutualisme et à la gestion d'une entreprise dont ils devaient progressivement devenir les uniques propriétaires, héritant de l'ensemble de l'?uvre à la mort de Godin, en 1888. Et ensuite ? La Société du Familistère de Guise, fruit du socialisme utopique autant que du réformisme républicain, réussit à survivre aux guerres mondiales et aux crises économiques, s'adaptant aux évolutions du marché et à la modernisation de l'industrie, pour finalement s'effondrer, épuisée par les difficultés internes, en plein c?ur du printemps 1968. La vie de Godin fut indiscutablement une « success story » édifiante, qui ne cesse d'impressionner aujourd'hui par le courage, l'inventivité et l'altruisme qui furent nécessaires pour constituer cet héritage.
