Japan spends close to the lowest percentage of its gross domestic product on health care among OECD countries, the United States spends the highest, yet life expectancies in Japan are among the world's longest. Clearly, a great deal can be learned from a comprehensive comparative analysis of health care issues in these two countries. In Health Care Issues in the United States and Japan, contributors explore the structural characteristics of the health care systems in both nations, the economic incentives underlying the systems, and how they operate in practice. Japan's system, they show, is characterized by generous insurance schemes, a lack of gatekeepers, and fee-for-service mechanisms. The United States' structure, on the other hand, is distinguished by for-profit hospitals, privatized health insurance, and managed care. But despite its relative success, an aging population and a general shift from infectious diseases to more chronic maladies are forcing the Japanese to consider a model more closely resembling that of the United States. In an age when rising health care costs and aging populations are motivating reforms throughout the world, this timely study will prove invaluable. 410 0$aNational Bureau of Economic Research conference report. 517 3 $aHealthcare issues in the United States and Japan 606 $aMedical care$zJapan 606 $aMedical care$zUnited States 615 0$aMedical care 615 0$aMedical care 676 $a362.10952 701 $aWise$b David A$0124389 701 $aYashiro$b Naohiro$f1946-$01809251 712 02$aNational Bureau of Economic Research. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910962495903321 996 $aHealth care issues in the United States and Japan$94361680 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03418nam 22005895 450 001 9910583596703321 005 20230629233819.0 010 $a9780520383555 010 $a0520383559 024 7 $a10.1515/9780520383555 035 $a(CKB)5670000000358079 035 $a(DE-B1597)627804 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780520383555 035 $a(ScCtBLL)bc3f9ed5-d12c-4023-a920-fda5a133a330 035 $a(OCoLC)1306633682 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31594316 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31594316 035 $a(Perlego)4432587 035 $a(oapen)doab78353 035 $a(EXLCZ)995670000000358079 100 $a20220629h20222022 fg 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe Practice of Texts $eEducation and Healing in South India /$fAnthony Cerulli 205 $a1 ed. 210 $cUniversity of California Press$d2022 210 1$aBerkeley, CA : $cUniversity of California Press, $d[2022] 210 4$dİ2022 215 $a1 online resource (240 p.) 311 08$a9780520383548 311 08$a0520383540 327 $tFrontmatter -- $tContents -- $tAcknowledgments -- $tNote on Transliteration and Pronunciation -- $tIntroduction: Gurukulas and Tradition-Making in Modern Ayurveda -- $t1 Situating Sanskrit (Texts) in Ayurvedic Education -- $t2 Practicing Texts -- $t3 Knowledge that Heals, Freely -- $t4 From Healing Texts to Ritualized Practice -- $t5 Texts in Practice and the Ayurvedic Patient -- $tNotes -- $tReferences -- $tIndex 330 $aA free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org.The Practice of Texts examines the uses of the Sanskrit medical classics in two educational institutions of India?s classical life science, Ayurveda: the college and the gurukula. In this interdisciplinary study, Anthony Cerulli probes late- and postcolonial reforms in ayurvedic education, the development of the ayurvedic college, and the impacts of the college curriculum on ways that ayurvedic physicians understand and use the Sanskrit classics in their professional work today. His fieldwork in south India illuminates the nature of philology and ritual in the ayurvedic gurukula and showcases how knowledge is exchanged among students, teachers, and patients. The result, Cerulli shows, is that the Sanskrit classics are presented and applied differently in the college and gurukula, producing a variety of relationships with these texts among practitioners. By interrogating the politics surrounding the place of the Sanskrit classics in ayurvedic curricula, this book reveals a spectrum of views about the history and tradition of Ayurveda in modern India. 606 $aMedicine, Ayurvedic$xStudy and teaching$zIndia$zKerala 606 $aMedicine, Ayurvedic$zIndia$zKerala$xHistory 606 $aReligion 606 $aHISTORY / Asia / India & South Asia$2bisacsh 615 0$aMedicine, Ayurvedic$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aMedicine, Ayurvedic$xHistory. 615 0$aReligion. 615 7$aHISTORY / Asia / India & South Asia. 676 $a615.5/38095483 700 $aCerulli$b Anthony, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01251863 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910583596703321 996 $aThe Practice of Texts$92901726 997 $aUNINA
