Many new ideas, initiatives, and showcases for social innovation have been introduced; however, project-based forms of experimentation are often just part of the ongoing urban politics (or governmentality), and consequently somewhat ephemeral, with traditional siloed city administrations remaining a central obstacle to SUD. Our Special Issue presents twelve papers that address the question of social innovation in sustainable urban development from very different angles. The contributions span issues concerning smart cities, innovation in the adaptive reuse of urban heritage, as well as policy options for regions in transition. In terms of social innovation for SUD purposes, the presented solutions range from transferable legal formalizations to the creation of urban ecosystems whose institutional structures ensure the inclusion of the civil society. Instead of a comprehensive, integrative SUD, robust sectoral solutions, or even phased solutions, are more likely to be sought. 606 $aGeography$2bicssc 606 $aResearch & information: general$2bicssc 610 $aaction research 610 $aadaptive reuse 610 $aAddis Ababa light rail transit 610 $aBarcelona ICZM protocol 610 $abeach access 610 $abest practices 610 $acitizen satisfaction 610 $acivic initiatives 610 $acoastal zones 610 $acommons 610 $aconservation 610 $aCOVID-19 610 $aCOVID-19 pandemic 610 $acultural heritage 610 $adigital rights 610 $adistributive justice 610 $aeconomic ecosystems 610 $aeducation 610 $afinancializaton 610 $afourth industrial revolution 610 $agovernance challenge 610 $agreen technology 610 $ainformal land-use practice 610 $ainformality 610 $ainfrastructure 610 $ainnovation 610 $ainstitutional innovation 610 $ainternational comparative analysis 610 $alegal aspects 610 $aLisboa/Lisbon 610 $amunicipal urban planning 610 $an/a 610 $aNEET 610 $anew working spaces 610 $aonline research 610 $apeople-centered smart cities 610 $apolicy experimentation 610 $aprecautionary principle 610 $apublic bicycles 610 $arailway transport 610 $aresilience strategies 610 $arural-urban ecosystems 610 $asmart cities 610 $asmart city 610 $asmart service 610 $asmartphone-based sharing-bicycles 610 $asocial inclusion 610 $asocial innovation 610 $asocial innovation diffusion 610 $asocio-technical transition 610 $astate governance 610 $astructural equation model 610 $aSub-Saharan Africa 610 $asustainability 610 $asustainable development 610 $asustainable smart city 610 $asustainable urban development 610 $asustainable urban transport 610 $atechnological innovation 610 $athe PRD 610 $atransitions to sustainability 610 $atransport infrastructure 610 $aurban informality 610 $aurban planning 610 $aurban planning and policy 610 $aurban rail 610 $aurban rehabilitation 610 $aYouth Guarantee Programme 615 7$aGeography 615 7$aResearch & information: general 700 $aMieg$b Harald A$4edt$01235144 702 $aMieg$b Harald A$4oth 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910576877203321 996 $aSocial Innovation in Sustainable Urban Development$93037555 997 $aUNINA
