Such beliefs are entertaining, and it is tempting to think of them as harmless. However, there is mounting evidence that paranormal beliefs can be dangerous - cases of children dying because parents rejected orthodox medicine in favour of alternative remedies, and 'psychics' who trade on the grief of the bereaved for personal profit and gain. Expenditure on the paranormal runs into billions of dollars each year. In Beyond Belief: Skepticism, Science and the Paranormal Martin Bridgstock provides an integrated understanding of what an evidence-based approach to the paranormal - a skeptical approach - involves, and why it is necessary. Bridgstock does not set out to show that all paranormal claims are necessarily false, but he does suggest that we all need the analytical ability and critical thinking skills to seek and assess the evidence for paranormal claims. 606 $aParapsychology 606 $aParapsychology and science 606 $aSkepticism 615 0$aParapsychology. 615 0$aParapsychology and science. 615 0$aSkepticism. 676 $a130 700 $aBridgstock$b Martin$f1948-$0847394 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910458168103321 996 $aBeyond belief$91892825 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02430nam 2200397 450 001 9910571734603321 005 20230517065914.0 035 $a(CKB)5860000000047391 035 $a(NjHacI)995860000000047391 035 $a(EXLCZ)995860000000047391 100 $a20230517d2017 uy 0 101 0 $aita 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 13$aIl lessico miceneo riferito ai cereali /$fNicola Antonello Vittiglio 210 1$aFlorence, Italy :$cFirenze University Press,$d2017. 215 $a1 online resource (212 pages) 311 $a88-927-3228-5 330 $aThis book constitutes a study of the lexicon of cereals as witnessed by the Mycenaean inscriptions. The study focuses both on the nouns used to designate cereals, on their compounds and derivatives, and on the terms with which they relate (adjectives, theonyms, toponyms, etc.). The volume is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyses the six Mycenaean terms together with their derivatives and compounds - phonetically transcribed - which designate cereals or include their names: wheat, barley, wheat flour, barley flour, bakers (= those who bake bread) together with others nouns belonging to the same semantic field, such as seed. The second chapter focuses on three Mycenaean logograms designating cereals: *120, *121 and *129, interpreted respectively as wheat, barley and flour. The third chapter describes the wide set of terms appearing contextually in the inscriptions in which cereals are attested, and groups them according to their meaning: human and divine recipients, toponyms, adjectives, other administrative terms, etc. Finally, the conclusions present an overall assessment of the data analysed in the previous chapters, that is an assessment affecting the economic, political, social and religious sphere of the Mycenaean civilisation. 606 $aGrain 606 $aGreek language$xDialects 606 $aInscriptions, Linear B 607 $aGreece$zMycenae (Extinct city) 615 0$aGrain. 615 0$aGreek language$xDialects. 615 0$aInscriptions, Linear B. 676 $a480 700 $aVittiglio$b Nicola Antonello$01347921 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910571734603321 996 $aIl lessico miceneo riferito ai cereali$93084889 997 $aUNINA
