Proceeding from these beginnings, Me?lie?s Boots traces how the full trajectory of Georges Me?lie?s' career during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, along with the larger cultural and historical contexts in which Me?lie?s operated, shaped his cinematic oeuvre. Solomon examines Me?lie?s' unpublished drawings and published caricatures, the role of laughter in his magic theater productions, and the constituent elements of what Me?lie?s called "the new profession of the cine?aste." The book also reveals Me?lie?s' connections to the Incohe?rents, a group of ephemeral artists from the 1880s, demonstrating the group's relevance for Me?lie?s, early cinema, and modernity. By positioning Me?lie?s in relation to the material culture of his time, Solomon demonstrates that Me?lie?s' work was expressive of a distinctly modern, and modernist, sensibility that appeared in France during the 1880s in the wake of the Second Industrial Revolution. 606 $aMotion picture producers and directors$zFrance$vBiography 606 $aFootwear$zFrance$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aMaterial culture$zFrance$zParis$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aFrance$2fast 607 $aFrance$zParis$2fast 608 $aBiographies.$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 608 $aBiographies.$2lcgft 615 0$aMotion picture producers and directors 615 0$aFootwear$xHistory 615 0$aMaterial culture$xHistory 676 $a791.4302/3092 700 $aSolomon$b Matthew$01198730 712 02$aMichigan Publishing (University of Michigan), 801 0$bEYM 801 1$bEYM 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910566490903321 996 $aMe?lie?s Boots$93602095 997 $aUNINA
