It is generally assumed that in prehistoric Slavic, the system was purely grammatical with the long form denoting definiteness and the short form denoting indefiniteness. The present study finds, on the basis of evidence collected from Old Russian chronicle texts, that even the earliest of these sources display a substantially transformed system no longer reflecting the opposition between definiteness and indefiniteness, but governed by parameters of information structure. 606 $aLanguage$2bicssc 610 $aAdjective 610 $aAdjectives 610 $aadjectives of affiliation 610 $aattributive position 610 $aChurch Slavic 610 $aEvolution 610 $aLarsen 610 $aLong 610 $aNovogrod Chronicle 610 $aprehistoric Slavic 610 $aRussian 610 $aShort 610 $aSystem 615 7$aLanguage 700 $aLarsen$b Karin$4aut$0886941 801 0$bPH02 801 1$bPH02 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910563056303321 996 $aThe Evolution of the System of Long and Short Adjectives in Old Russian$93021943 997 $aUNINA
