Proliferating in a rich variety of forms, these lyrical, impassioned, script-like texts in Latin and the vernacular had a deceptively simple goal: to teach their readers how to feel. They were thus instrumental in shaping and sustaining the wide-scale shift in medieval Christian sensibility from fear of God to compassion for the suffering Christ. Affective Meditation and the Invention of Medieval Compassion advances a new narrative for this broad cultural change and the meditative writings that both generated and reflected it. Sarah McNamer locates women as agents in the creation of the earliest and most influential texts in the genre, from John of Fécamp's Libellus to the Meditationes Vitae Christi, thus challenging current paradigms that cast the compassionate affective mode as Anselmian or Franciscan in origin. The early development of the genre in women's practices had a powerful and lasting legacy. With special attention to Middle English texts, including Nicholas Love's Mirror and a wide range of Passion lyrics and laments, Affective Meditation and the Invention of Medieval Compassion illuminates how these scripts for the performance of prayer served to construct compassion itself as an intimate and feminine emotion. To feel compassion for Christ, in the private drama of the heart that these texts stage, was to feel like a woman. This was an assumption about emotion that proved historically consequential, McNamer demonstrates, as she traces some of its legal, ethical, and social functions in late medieval England. 410 0$aMiddle Ages series. 606 $aCompassion$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aDevotional literature, English (Middle)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aDevotional literature, Italian$xHistory and criticism 606 $aDevotional literature, Latin (Medieval and modern)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEmotions$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aFemininity$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aSorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Devotion to$zEngland$xHistory$yTo 1500 610 $aLiterature. 610 $aMedieval and Renaissance Studies. 610 $aReligion. 615 0$aCompassion$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory 615 0$aDevotional literature, English (Middle)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aDevotional literature, Italian$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aDevotional literature, Latin (Medieval and modern)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEmotions$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory 615 0$aFemininity$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory 615 0$aSorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Devotion to$xHistory 676 $a242.0942/0902 686 $a11.52$2bcl 686 $a18.05$2bcl 700 $aMcNamer$b Sarah$01568471 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788374003321 996 $aAffective meditation and the invention of medieval compassion$93840616 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02733oam 2200649 c 450 001 9910563025703321 005 20250513223434.0 024 7 $a10.3726/b12299 035 $a(CKB)4340000000239156 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/26050 035 $a(PH02)9783954796106 035 $a(EXLCZ)994340000000239156 100 $a20240525d1984 uy 0 101 0 $ager 135 $aurnnunnnannuu 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aFe?dor Sologub. 1884 - 1984 606 $aLiterature & literary studies$2bicssc 610 $a1884 610 $a1984 610 $aAufsätze 610 $aBibliographie 610 $aersten 610 $aFëdor 610 $aGedenken 610 $ahundertsten 610 $aJahrestag 610 $aLauer 610 $arussische Moderne 610 $aRussland 610 $aSlavische Sprachwissenschaft 610 $aSologub 610 $aSymbolismus 610 $aTeternikov 610 $aTexte 610 $aVeröffentlichung 610 $aWerkes 615 7$aLiterature & literary studies 700 $aLauer$b Bernhard$4edt$01325308 702 $aLauer$b Bernhard$4edt 702 $aSteltner$b Ulrich$4edt 801 0$bPH02 801 1$bPH02 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910563025703321 996 $aFëdor Sologub. 1884 - 1984$93036727 997 $aUNINA
