Mark Kauntze argues that this allegory of creation is best understood as a product of the vibrant intellectual culture of twelfth-century France. Bernard Silvestris established the authority of his treatise by imitating those ancient philosophers and poets who were assiduously studied in the contemporary schools. But he also revised and updated them, to develop a compelling intervention into twelfth-century debates about man's place in nature and the relationship between theology and natural science. Using a wealth of manuscript evidence, Kauntze reconstructs the school context in which Bernard worked, and shows how the Cosmographia itself became an object of scholarly annotation and imitation in the later Middle Ages. 410 0$aMittellateinische Studien und Texte ;$vVolume 47. 606 $aLiterature, Medieval$xHistory and criticism 606 $aDidactic poetry, Latin (Medieval and modern)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCosmology, Medieval$vPoetry 607 $aTours (France)$xIntellectual life 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aLiterature, Medieval$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aDidactic poetry, Latin (Medieval and modern)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCosmology, Medieval 676 $a189 700 $aKauntze$b Mark$0919484 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464868403321 996 $aAuthority and imitation$92062334 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02081nam 2200457z- 450 001 9910557465803321 005 20211118 035 $a(CKB)5400000000043140 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/73303 035 $a(oapen)doab73303 035 $a(EXLCZ)995400000000043140 100 $a20202111d2019 |y 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn|---annan 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aMixotrophy in Protists: From Model Systems to Mathematical Models, 2nd Edition 210 $cFrontiers Media SA$d2019 215 $a1 online resource (126 p.) 311 08$a2-88963-148-6 330 $aThis eBook is a collection of articles from a Frontiers Research Topic.
