The aim of this monograph was to study a problem that is occurring on a global scale and, above all, in the most developed countries, which is the population emigration from rural areas to urban areas due to the labour and service opportunities offered by the latter. This is causing a demographic deterioration of rural areas, and those that remain show high rates of ageing, masculinisation, or low demographic growth. In addition, and interrelated with this demographic deterioration, there is economic and environmental degradation. Rural areas are territories with increasingly lower purchasing power, job opportunities, and services for the population, which are classified as "spaces in crisis". The papers in this Special Issue evidence the many public and private strategies that are being pursued to achieve sustainable rural development in declining areas. The diversity of approaches offer a vision of the practical application and the obstacles or difficulties that many of them are having to achieve their objectives. All of these strategies are intended to achieve economic dynamism that is respectful of the environment and from there to be able to reduce the regressive demographic processes in rural areas. These are different approaches that allow us to contribute, from scientific, holistic, and multidisciplinary knowledge, and they can help decision making in public policy and planning strategies. 517 $aSustainable Rural Development 606 $aHistory$2bicssc 606 $aSocial and cultural anthropology$2bicssc 606 $aSocial and ethical issues$2bicssc 610 $aaccessibility 610 $aagroecological production 610 $aanalytic hierarchy process 610 $aanalyze 610 $aAndalusia 610 $abottom-up approach 610 $aChina 610 $aclassification and types of rural areas 610 $acollaborative governance 610 $acomplex spatial models 610 $adata envelopment analysis 610 $adecision making 610 $adriving factors 610 $aeconomic diversification 610 $aecosystem services 610 $aentrepreneurship 610 $aEU instruments 610 $aEuropean fishing funds 610 $afinger-jointed studs 610 $afishing tourism 610 $aforest market factors 610 $afunded and unfunded projects 610 $aGalicia (Spain) 610 $ageographically weighted regression model 610 $aGIS 610 $agoal programming 610 $agood practices 610 $ahunting tourism 610 $aindustrial district 610 $aindustrial land 610 $ainformation and communication technologies 610 $aintensive agriculture 610 $aland lease market 610 $aland use change 610 $aland-use planning 610 $alandscape transformation 610 $aLEADER approach 610 $alocal action group 610 $alocal productive system 610 $alow-density populated areas 610 $amanagement system 610 $an/a 610 $anatural protected area 610 $aneo-endogenous rural development 610 $apartnerships 610 $apopulation 610 $aprice 610 $aProder Program 610 $apublic institutions 610 $arainwater harvesting 610 $aregional composite indicators 610 $aregional identity 610 $arural areas 610 $arural areas in decline 610 $arural decline 610 $arural depopulation and aging 610 $arural development 610 $arural district 610 $arural enhancement 610 $arural land rights 610 $arural land system reform pilot 610 $arural landscape 610 $arural residential construction 610 $arural territory 610 $arurality 610 $aShortandy district 610 $asmart villages 610 $asocioeconomic and environmental impacts 610 $asolar 610 $aSpain 610 $aspray foam 610 $asustainable development 610 $asustainable rural development 610 $asustainable urban growth 610 $atechnological era 610 $aterritorial heritage 610 $aterritorial planning 610 $atop-down approach 610 $avulnerability 610 $ayoung and female entrepreneurs 615 7$aHistory 615 7$aSocial and cultural anthropology 615 7$aSocial and ethical issues 700 $aMasot$b Ana Nieto$4edt$01314857 702 $aGasco?n$b Jose?
