In order to do so, this publication highlights the limitations of assessing Japanese film as a cinematic phenomenon confined to its national borders. Throughout this issue, the concept of transnationality is not confined to a single definition and is instead used as an analytical framework which allow authors to surpass narrow perspectives that neglect the complex nature of Japanese film in terms of its esthetics, narratives, and theoretical approaches as well as production, consumption, and distribution systems. This volume casts light on the extraordinary international flows of images, stories, iconographies, and theories between Japan and other countries, and assesses the dialectic relationship between two apparently contradictory aspects: external influences and Japanese uniqueness, revealing how ?uniquely Japanese? films may ironically contain foreign codes of representation. Thus, the articles presented here bring a more comprehensive understanding of how global cultural flows have shaped local creativity. Some authors adopt additional transnational perspectives, through which they analyse how Japan is represented as ?other? from outside and how the rest of the world is represented by Japan, or propose a renewal of film theories on Japanese cinema that have traditionally been dominated by Western writings. Overall, manuscripts included in this publication help the reader to understand different ways in which Japan expands beyond Japanese Cinema and Japanese Cinema expands beyond Japan. 606 $aThe arts$2bicssc 606 $aFilms, cinema$2bicssc 610 $aShakespeare 610 $aKurosawa 610 $aMacbeth 610 $afilms 610 $atranslation 610 $atranscultural 610 $aNoh 610 $atragedy 610 $afate 610 $aguilt 610 $acontemporary Japanese cinema 610 $acultural blending 610 $aintertextuality 610 $amise en abyme 610 $aNobuhiro Suwa 610 $atransculturality 610 $a(trans)national cinema 610 $anational cinema 610 $atransnational Japanese film 610 $ataiyo?zoku 610 $amukokuseki 610 $a'kimono effect' 610 $ayouth icons 610 $apostwar film festivals 610 $acartoon movie 610 $aJapan and Spain 610 $atransnational imagery 610 $afilm studies 610 $aideological analysis 610 $aideology 610 $aJapanese cinema 610 $anation 610 $aNew Left 610 $aNew Wave 610 $aNuberu Bagu 610 $aYoshida Kiju 610 $aNaomi Kawase 610 $acinema of place 610 $awomen directors 610 $aart cinema 610 $ainternational film festivals 610 $afemale authorship 610 $aauteur 610 $ametamorphosis 610 $aanimation 610 $aFranz Kafka 610 $acinematic picture 610 $afilm aesthetics 610 $atheory of beauty 610 $aikebana 610 $akire 610 $ageido? 610 $afilm philosophy 610 $aJapanese aesthetics 610 $atranscultural thinking 610 $aRi Koran 610 $aLi Xianglan 610 $aYamaguchi Yoshiko 610 $atransnationality 610 $aJapanese Empire 610 $apropaganda films 615 7$aThe arts 615 7$aFilms, cinema 700 $aCenteno$b Marcos$4edt$01322507 702 $aMorita$b Nori$4edt 702 $aCenteno$b Marcos$4oth 702 $aMorita$b Nori$4oth 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910557402803321 996 $aJapanese Transnational Cinema$93035098 997 $aUNINA
