In many countries, the spatial consolidation of food provisioning has deprived many urban neighbourhoods of easy access to food, particularly foodstuffs integral to a healthy diet. These often socioeconomically disadvantaged urban areas are referred to as ?food deserts?. However, studies of urban food deserts in cities of the Global South are sparse, given their complicated urban food systems with the strong presence of informal food economies and diverse food sources. This book draws on empirical studies from South African, Brazilian and Chinese cities to investigate the food desert narrative, the characteristics of urban food environment and the various socioeconomic factors shaping it, as well as the food security and health consequences of urban food deserts. These studies reveal the limitations of applying the food desert concept to cities in the Global South and call for more holistic measurements of urban food insecurity. 517 $aUrban Food Deserts 606 $aHumanities$2bicssc 606 $aSocial interaction$2bicssc 610 $aproximity to food outlets 610 $adietary diversity 610 $afood access 610 $afood security 610 $afood environment 610 $afood geographies 610 $afood deserts 610 $amalnutrition 610 $achildren 610 $aurbanization 610 $aSouthern Africa 610 $afood sources 610 $aurban food system 610 $aNOVA food classification system 610 $ashopping behaviors 610 $afood insecurity 610 $afood purchasing characteristics 610 $asocioeconomic area 610 $aobesity 610 $aout-shoppers 610 $aWindhoek 610 $aNamibia 610 $ainformal settlements 610 $ainformal food sector 610 $asupermarkets 610 $aurban poverty 610 $asocial networks 610 $afood desert 610 $afood justice 610 $aAfrican urbanism 610 $aAfrican food systems 610 $afood policy 610 $aFood deserts 610 $afood sourcing 610 $aMexico City 610 $aNairobi 610 $afood environments 610 $aurban 610 $amapping 610 $anutrition 610 $aSouth Africa 610 $aGhana 610 $agovernance 610 $aultra-processed 615 7$aHumanities 615 7$aSocial interaction 700 $aCrush$b Jonathan$4edt$01140931 702 $aSi$b Zhenzhong$4edt 702 $aCrush$b Jonathan$4oth 702 $aSi$b Zhenzhong$4oth 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910557365703321 996 $aUrban Food Deserts: Perspectives from the Global South$93030709 997 $aUNINA
