It is a dimensionless quantity, used in particular in agro-forestry, urban environment, cryosphere and geology. It is an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), deemed extremely meaningful to compute the earth heat balance. The albedo of natural surfaces varies largely, especially in the visible, with the lowest values found for water bodies and dense vegetation canopies and the highest values for desert and snow. It also changes with the angular distribution and spectral composition of the incident radiation and with the surface moisture. Satellite observations allow consistent measuring of the surface albedo at continental scale over a short period of time. Long-term series of surface albedo are good indicators of climate change, especially over glaciers and polar caps. On the other hand, the albedo of bare soil provides a good diagnostic of their degradation. The reliability of satellite albedo is verified against ground-based radiometers and UAV, which also serves to calibrate the instruments embarked on space-borne observing systems and check the quality of the atmospheric correction. 606 $aResearch & information: general$2bicssc 606 $aEnvironmental economics$2bicssc 610 $asurface albedo 610 $aurbanization 610 $avegetation variation 610 $aclimate change 610 $aDMSP 610 $aalbedo 610 $aland use 610 $aremote sensing 610 $aUnmanned Aerial Vehicles 610 $avegetation indices 610 $asnow 610 $aclimate 610 $aUnmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) 610 $alandscape 610 $aconsumer-grade camera 610 $aradiometric calibration 610 $asea ice 610 $aVIIRS 610 $aArctic 610 $aPROMICE 610 $aGC-NET 610 $avalidation 610 $aAVHRR 610 $aBRDF 610 $aMODIS 610 $aVJB 610 $aLTDR 610 $adirectional correction 610 $aspatial representativeness 610 $asemivariogram 610 $aLandsat 610 $aHLS 610 $aSentinel 2 610 $aSURFRAD 610 $aOzFlux 610 $adirectional hemispherical reflectance 610 $abi-hemispherical reflectance 610 $atower albedometer 610 $aCGLS 610 $aMISR 610 $aupscaling 610 $abare soil albedo 610 $aMODIS albedo 610 $acontiguous United States 610 $asoil line 610 $aLandsat albedo 610 $asoil moisture 610 $aland surface albedo 610 $atime series 610 $ahigh spatio-temporal resolution 610 $aEnKF 610 $aspectral unmixing 610 $aempirical modeling 610 $alinear endmember 610 $aforest cover 610 $aforest management 610 $aforest structure 610 $aBRDF/Albedo 610 $aNDSI Snow Cover 615 7$aResearch & information: general 615 7$aEnvironmental economics 700 $aLiang$b Shunlin$4edt$0311491 702 $aRoujean$b Jean-Louis$4edt 702 $aHe$b Tao$4edt 702 $aLiang$b Shunlin$4oth 702 $aRoujean$b Jean-Louis$4oth 702 $aHe$b Tao$4oth 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910557135603321 996 $aRemotely Sensed Albedo$93017175 997 $aUNINA
