This paper takes stock of the involvement of foreign banks in the Chinese banking sector in the perspective of international experience. While in most other countries foreign bank entry took the form of direct takeover or majority shareholding, foreign investments in China's banks have been minority shareholdings with very limited management involvement. The paper concludes that China appears to be well positioned to benefit from further opening of the banking sector to foreign investors. International experience suggests that greater competition from and participation of foreign banks can in general bring important benefits if appropriate incentives and sufficient opportunities are created. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/292 606 $aBanks and banking$zChina 606 $aInvestments$zChina 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking, Foreign$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aCommercial banks$2imf 606 $aCredit$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aForeign banks$2imf 606 $aForeign direct investment$2imf 606 $aInternational Investment$2imf 606 $aInvestments, Foreign$2imf 606 $aLong-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMonetary economics$2imf 606 $aMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: General$2imf 606 $aMoney and Monetary Policy$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 607 $aChina, People's Republic of$2imf 615 0$aBanks and banking 615 0$aInvestments 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks and banking, Foreign 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aCommercial banks 615 7$aCredit 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aForeign banks 615 7$aForeign direct investment 615 7$aInternational Investment 615 7$aInvestments, Foreign 615 7$aLong-term Capital Movements 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMonetary economics 615 7$aMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: General 615 7$aMoney and Monetary Policy 615 7$aMortgages 700 $aLeigh$b Lamin$01815908 701 $aPodpiera$b Richard$01816056 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAsia and Pacific Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910964537503321 996 $aThe Rise of Foreign Investment in China?s Banks?Taking Stock$94372418 997 $aUNINA
