Instead, the courts drag defendants, victims, and their friends and family through a confusing and protracted public spectacle. Along the way, forensic scientists, sexual assault nurse examiners, and police officers provide their insight and expertise, shaping the story that emerges for the judge and jury. These expert narratives intersect with the stories of victims, witnesses, and their communities to reproduce our cultural understandings of sexual violence, but too often this process results in reinscribing racial, gendered, and class inequalities. This work draws on observations of over 680 court appearances in Milwaukee County's felony sexual assault courts, as well as interviews with judges, attorneys, forensic scientists, jurors, sexual assault nurse examiners, and victim advocates. 410 0$aNYU scholarship online. 606 $aSex crimes$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 606 $aEvidence, Criminal$zUnited States 606 $aSex discrimination in criminal justice administration$zUnited States 606 $aDiscrimination in criminal justice administration$zUnited States 606 $aForensic sciences$zUnited States 615 0$aSex crimes$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aEvidence, Criminal 615 0$aSex discrimination in criminal justice administration 615 0$aDiscrimination in criminal justice administration 615 0$aForensic sciences 676 $a345.730253 700 $aHlavka$b Heather R.$01217471 702 $aMulla$b Sameena 801 0$bStDuBDS 801 1$bStDuBDS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910554486903321 996 $aBodies in evidence$92878026 997 $aUNINA
