In Fateful Beauty, Douglas Mao recovers the lost intellectual, social, and literary history of the belief that the beauty--or ugliness--of the environment in which one is raised influences or even determines one's fate. Weaving together readings in literature, psychology, biology, philosophy, education, child-rearing advice, and interior design, he shows how this idea abetted a dramatic rise in attention to environment in many discourses and in many practices affecting the lives of the young between the late nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth. Through original and detailed analyses of Wilde, Walter Pater, James Joyce, Theodore Dreiser, Rebecca West, and W. H. Auden, Mao shows that English-language writing of the period was informed in crucial but previously unrecognized ways by the possibility that beautiful environments might produce better people. He also reveals how these writers shared concerns about environment, evolution, determinism, freedom, and beauty with scientists and social theorists such as Herbert Spencer, Hermann von Helmholtz, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, and W.H.R. Rivers. In so doing, Mao challenges conventional views of the roles of beauty and the aesthetic in art and life during this time. 606 $aLiterature, Modern$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLiterature, Modern$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLiterature and society 606 $aLiterature$xAesthetics 615 0$aLiterature, Modern$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aLiterature, Modern$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aLiterature and society. 615 0$aLiterature$xAesthetics. 676 $a801/.93 700 $aMao$b Douglas$f1966-$01464717 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910792698903321 996 $aFateful beauty$93752358 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04146oam 2201117 c 450 001 9910554242803321 005 20260102090118.0 010 $a9783839452288 010 $a3839452287 024 3 $a9783839452288 035 $a(CKB)4100000011249212 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6733043 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6733043 035 $a(OCoLC)1272997877 035 $a(transcript Verlag)9783839452288 035 $a(DE-B1597)577750 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783839452288 035 $a(OCoLC)1280945700 035 $a(Perlego)2232039 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011249212 100 $a20260102d2021 uy 0 101 0 $ager 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aDie neue (Echtzeit-)Ordnung der Städte$eWie digitale Anwendungen den Stadtraum re-organisieren$fMarion Kalmer 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aBielefeld$ctranscript Verlag$d2021 215 $a1 online resource (313 pages) 225 0 $aArchitekturen 300 $aA challenge for our cities: the re-organization of urban space through a new real-time order. 311 08$a9783837652284 311 08$a3837652289 327 $aCover -- Vorbemerkung -- Inhalt -- 0/ re-organisieren: Echtzeitordnung auf Abruf: Einleitung -- 1/ Raumstrategie -- 2/ Raumdefinition -- 3/ Raumdisposition -- 4/ re-organisieren: Echtzeitordnung auf Abruf: Zusammenfassung und Ausblick -- Danksagung -- Literaturverzeichnis -- Liste der persönlichen Recherche. 330 $aEine neue Echtzeit-Ordnung schreibt sich mit großer Geschwindigkeit in unsere Städte ein und beginnt, sie zu re-organisieren. Sie ist die Konsequenz einer neuen, sublimen Form von Dienstleistungslandschaft, wird in digitalen Protokollen strukturiert und durch mobile Applikationen vertrieben. In bisher ungekannter Weise werden räumliche Strukturen geplant, definiert und verfügbar gemacht ? ein kritisches Moment der Kommerzialisierung und Kontrolle, gleichzeitig aber eine Option faszinierender elastischer Werkzeuge. Marion Kalmer präsentiert eine neue, kategorial zusammengezogene Reflexion der wesentlichen Phänomene dieser abrufbaren räumlichen Ordnung. 330 1 $aBesprochen in:https://www.arcguide.de, 05.10.2021Fraunhofer IRB, 11 (2021) 410 0$aArchitekturen 517 2 $aKalmer, Die neue (Echtzeit-)Ordnung der Städte$eWie digitale Anwendungen den Stadtraum re-organisieren 606 $aStädtische Organisation 606 $aUrban Organization 606 $aEchtzeit 606 $aRealtime 606 $aRaum 606 $aSpace 606 $aDienstleistungslandschaft 606 $aService Landscape 606 $aStadtraum 606 $aUrban Space 606 $aApps 606 $aMobilität 606 $aMobility 606 $aStadt 606 $aCity 606 $aArchitektur 606 $aArchitecture 606 $aMedien 606 $aMedia 606 $aMediensoziologie 606 $aSociology of Media 606 $aUrban Studies 606 $aStadtplanung 606 $aUrban Planning 615 4$aStädtische Organisation 615 4$aUrban Organization 615 4$aEchtzeit 615 4$aRealtime 615 4$aRaum 615 4$aSpace 615 4$aDienstleistungslandschaft 615 4$aService Landscape 615 4$aStadtraum 615 4$aUrban Space 615 4$aApps 615 4$aMobilität 615 4$aMobility 615 4$aStadt 615 4$aCity 615 4$aArchitektur 615 4$aArchitecture 615 4$aMedien 615 4$aMedia 615 4$aMediensoziologie 615 4$aSociology of Media 615 4$aUrban Studies 615 4$aStadtplanung 615 4$aUrban Planning 686 $aRB 10909$qDE-Sp3$2rvk 700 $aKalmer$b Marion$p
