At about the same time, tape recorders became widely available in the USSR. Privately recorded and circulated on tape?a process called magnitizdat?guitar poetry quickly became the most popular form of dissident culture in the post-Stalin period. The guitar poets and their songs are known and loved throughout the USSR. Songs to Seven Strings is the first book in any language about this unusual literary genre. Smith places guitar poetry within the context of official "mass song"; "middle ground" songs, where official and unofficial cultures overlap; and the strong underground traditions of the gypsy song, cruel romance, and criminal song. 606 $aPopular culture$zSoviet Union 606 $aPopular music$zSoviet Union$xHistory and criticism 606 $aUnderground literature$zSoviet Union$xHistory and criticism 606 $aProtest poetry, Russian$xHistory and criticism 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPopular culture 615 0$aPopular music$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aUnderground literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aProtest poetry, Russian$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a891.71/044/09 700 $aSmith$b Gerald Stanton$0400493 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910552754303321 996 $aSongs to Seven Strings$92804460 997 $aUNINA
