Building on a unique combination of unexplored Indian texts and Dutch archival records, this research offers a captivating new analysis of political culture, power relations, and dynastic developments. In great detail, this monograph provides both new facts and fresh insights that contest existing scholarship. By highlighting their competitive, fluid, and dynamic nature, it undermines the historiography viewing these courts as harmonic, hierarchic, and static. Far from being remote, ritualised figures, we find kings and Brahmins contesting with other courtiers for power. At the same time, by stressing continuities with the past, this study questions recent scholarship that perceives a fundamentally new form of Nayaka kingship. Thus, this research has important repercussions for the way we perceive both these kingdoms and their ?medieval? precursors. 410 0$aColonial and global history through Dutch sources 606 $aAsian history$2bicssc 606 $aPolitics & government$2bicssc 606 $aIndia$2bicssc 607 $aIndia, South$xCourt and courtiers$xHistory 607 $aIndia, South$xKings and rulers 607 $aIndia, South$xHistory 607 $aIndia, South$xPolitics and government 607 $aIndia$xHistory$y1526-1765 610 $aSouth Asia, India, kingship, courts, modern history, diplomacy, political history 615 7$aAsian history 615 7$aPolitics & government 615 7$aIndia 676 $a954/.8025 700 $aBes$b Lennart$01264585 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910547690603321 996 $aThe Heirs of Vijayanagara$92965443 997 $aUNINA
