Novel Medicine shows how fiction shaped and was shaped by medical discourse and how it popularized practical, vernacular kinds of knowledge. A vibrant exchange among literary, commercial, and medical spheres resulted in a web of texts that produced distinct genealogies of romantic and sexual disease, iconographic lineages of heroic doctors, and medicalized attitudes toward reading. Novel Medicine interrogates how fiction incorporated, created, and disseminated medical knowledge. Conversely, it demonstrates how practical medical texts employed literary devices and figurative strategies to propagate information. Employing interdisciplinary strategies, it examines the dynamic interplay between discourses of fiction and medicine as well as their representations of illnesses and healers. Critical readings of fictional and medical texts, as well as sources such as fiction commentary, criticism, medical manuscripts, newspapers, essays, print images, and biographies inform an understanding of the body in early modern China. These readings also provide a counterpoint to prevailing narratives that focus on the 'literati' aspects of the novel, showing that these texts were not merely read, but were used by a wide variety of readers and for a range of purposes. This inquiry into the intersections of kinds and sources of knowledge--fictional and real, elite and vernacular--illuminates the history of reading and daily life and challenges us to rethink the nature of Chinese literature"--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aModern Language Initiative Books 606 $aMedizin$gMotiv$2gnd 606 $aChinesisch$2gnd 606 $aLiteratur$2gnd 606 $aQing Dynasty (China)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01696773 606 $aPopular culture$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01071344 606 $aMedicine in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01015167 606 $aMedical literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014347 606 $aLiterature and society$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01000096 606 $aKnowledge, Sociology of$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00988190 606 $aHealing in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00952728 606 $aDiseases in literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00895210 606 $aChinese fiction$xMing dynasty$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01906858 606 $aChinese fiction$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00857362 606 $aBooks and reading$xSocial aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00836470 606 $aHISTORY$zAsia$zChina$2bisacsh 606 $aLITERARY CRITICISM$xAsian$xGeneral$2bisacsh 606 $aMedical Writing$xhistory 606 $aReading$xhistory 606 $aMedicine in Literature 606 $aKnowledge, Sociology of$xHistory 606 $aPopular culture$zChina$xHistory 606 $aBooks and reading$xSocial aspects$zChina$xHistory 606 $aLiterature and society$zChina$xHistory 606 $aMedical literature$zChina$xHistory 606 $aDiseases in literature 606 $aMedicine in literature 606 $aHealing in literature 606 $aChinese fiction$yQing dynasty, 1644-1912$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChinese fiction$yMing dynasty, 1368-1644$xHistory and criticism 607 $aChina$2fast 607 $aChina 608 $aHistory. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 610 $aAsian history 615 7$aMedizin 615 7$aChinesisch. 615 7$aLiteratur. 615 7$aQing Dynasty (China) 615 7$aPopular culture. 615 7$aMedicine in literature. 615 7$aMedical literature. 615 7$aLiterature and society. 615 7$aKnowledge, Sociology of. 615 7$aHealing in literature. 615 7$aDiseases in literature. 615 7$aChinese fiction$xMing dynasty. 615 7$aChinese fiction. 615 7$aBooks and reading$xSocial aspects. 615 7$aHISTORY 615 7$aLITERARY CRITICISM$xAsian$xGeneral. 615 7$aMedical Writing$xhistory. 615 7$aReading$xhistory 615 7$aMedicine in Literature. 615 7$aKnowledge, Sociology of$xHistory. 615 7$aPopular culture$xHistory. 615 7$aBooks and reading$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 7$aLiterature and society$xHistory. 615 7$aMedical literature$xHistory. 615 7$aDiseases in literature. 615 7$aMedicine in literature. 615 7$aHealing in literature. 615 7$aChinese fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 7$aChinese fiction$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a895.13/409 700 $aSchonebaum$b Andrew$f1975-$01119167 712 02$aThe Geiss Hsu Foundation$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910543724203321 996 $aNovel Medicine$92647451 997 $aUNINA
