The past two decades have promoted the ideals of participation and partnership, yet key decisions affecting people's lives continue to be made without sufficient attention to the socio-political realities of the countries in which they live. Embedded working traditions, vested interests and institutional inertia mean that old habits and cultures persist among the development community. This includes not only direct effects through contact with the species via bites, wounds and disease, but also indirect effects caused by changes induced in ecosystems by invasive species, such as more water hyacinth increasing mosquito levels and thereby the potential for malaria. The book covers a wide range of case studies from different taxa (animals and plants), and provides an overview of the diverse impacts of invasive species on health in developed and developing countries. It covers invasive (and poisonous) plants, marine species, scorpions, spiders and other arachnids, ticks and dust mites, insects (e.g. bugs, ants, wasps, and moths), mosquitoes and other diptera, freshwater species (invertebrates and fishes), amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. Also, climate change effects on alien species relevant to human health are discussed. The broad spectrum of the analysed case studies will ensure the appeal of the book to a wide public, including researchers of biological invasions, physicians, policy-makers and managers, and students of invasive species in ecology, animal and plant biology and public health medicine. 410 0$aCABI invasive species series ;$v10. 606 $aIntroduced organisms$xHealth aspects 606 $aBiological invasions$xHealth aspects 615 0$aIntroduced organisms$xHealth aspects. 615 0$aBiological invasions$xHealth aspects. 676 $a578.6/2 702 $aMazza$b Giuseppe$c(Biologist) 702 $aTricarico$b Elena 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bUIU 801 2$bCUY 801 2$bNLE 801 2$bDKU 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bEBLCP 801 2$bYDX 801 2$bYDX 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bMERUC 801 2$bIUL 801 2$bWYU 801 2$bOTZ 801 2$bTKN 801 2$bNJT 801 2$bAGL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910532937803321 996 $aInvasive species and human health$92721451 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01839nam 2200421Ia 450 001 9910696128503321 005 20071004101823.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002375528 035 $a(OCoLC)173660777 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002375528 100 $a20071004d2007 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aMortgage financing$b[electronic resource] $eseller-funded down-payment assistance changes the structure of the purchase transaction and negatively affects loan performance : testimony before the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity, Committee on Financial Services, House of Representatives /$fstatement of William B. By drawing on extensive survey evidence, it charts Germans' changing views of the political system prior to and following unification. The study examines four aspects of the political system: how it functions overall, attitudes towards the Basic Law, trust in representative institutions, and views of the European Union. Rather than accepting or rejecting democracy, the research shows how Germans merge shades of criticism and support. In addition, it pinpoints the factors that condition support, showing how it is influenced by durable and changeable stimuli. Overall, the findings challenge suggestions of a crisis of democracy but they also demonstrate that support is particularly low towards aspects of the European Union. This book appeals to readers interested in public opinion and democracy in Germany, along with those interested in the changing relationship between citizens and the state. Ross Campbell is Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley, UK. His research focuses on the politics of the Federal Republic of Germany and he has published widely on attitudes towards democracy, electoral behaviour and political participation. His recent articles have appeared in the European Journal of Political Research, International Political Science Review, German Politics and Contemporary Politics. He is a member of the editorial board for the Journal for Contemporary European Studies. 410 0$aNew Perspectives in German Political Studies,$x2947-6755 606 $aEurope$xPolitics and government 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aWorld politics 606 $aEuropean Politics 606 $aPolitical Science 606 $aPolitical History 615 0$aEurope$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 0$aWorld politics. 615 14$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aPolitical Science. 615 24$aPolitical History. 676 $a327.43009034 676 $a320.94309049 700 $aCampbell$b Ross$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01061598 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910338054903321 996 $aPopular Support for Democracy in Unified Germany$92519328 997 $aUNINA
