Ismail Patel develops the notion of Islamophobia not as a continuation of the antagonistic relation from the British Empire but as a postcolonial reformulation of the figure of the Muslim. The book views Islamophobia studies as a paradigm, engages in the debate of Islamophobia as a global phenomenon, investigates the contestation over its definition and challenges the view of Islamophobia as a reserve of the far-right. It assesses the debate around the concept of identity and shows how the colonised figure of the Muslim provided significance in constructing British imperial identity. Providing a decolonial, counter-Islamophobia approach that challenges Britishness' exclusionary white symbolic content, the book calls for a liberating idea of Britishness that promotes a post-racist rather than a post-race society. Theoretically rich in analysis, this book will contribute to discussions of identity formation, Britishness, Islamophobia and counter-Islamophobia. It will be of use to students and researchers across history, politics, sociology, cultural studies, literary studies, and anthropology. Ismail Adam Patel is a visiting Research Fellow at University of Leeds and the chair of UK based NGO Friends of Al-Aqsa. 410 0$aMapping Global Racisms,$x2946-3149 606 $aPolitical sociology 606 $aRace 606 $aKnowledge, Sociology of 606 $aImperialism 606 $aReligion and politics 606 $aPolitical Sociology 606 $aRace and Ethnicity Studies 606 $aSociology of Knowledge and Discourse 606 $aImperialism and Colonialism 606 $aPolitics and Religion 615 0$aPolitical sociology. 615 0$aRace. 615 0$aKnowledge, Sociology of. 615 0$aImperialism. 615 0$aReligion and politics. 615 14$aPolitical Sociology. 615 24$aRace and Ethnicity Studies. 615 24$aSociology of Knowledge and Discourse. 615 24$aImperialism and Colonialism. 615 24$aPolitics and Religion. 676 $a305.6970941 676 $a305.6970941 700 $aPatel$b Ismail Adam$01078585 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910523000703321 996 $aThe Muslim Problem$92590795 997 $aUNINA
