Art that is created in acts of resistance. 330 $a"In light of the recent rise of right-wing populism in numerous political contexts and in the face of resurgent nationalism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and demagoguery, this book investigates how historical and contemporary cultural producers have sought to resist, confront, confound, mock, or call out situations of political oppression in Germany, a country which has seen a dramatic range of political extremes during the past century. While the current turn to nationalist populism is global, it is perhaps most disturbing in Germany, given its history with its stormy first democracy in the interwar Weimar Republic; its infamous National Socialist (Nazi) period of the 1930s and 1940s; and its split Cold-War existence, with Marxist-Leninist Totalitarianism in the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany's barely-hidden ties to the Nazi past. Equally important, Germans have long considered art and culture critical to constructions of national identity, which meant that they were frequently implicated in political action. This book therefore examines a range of work by artists from the early twentieth century to the present, work created in an array of contexts and media that demonstrates a wide range of possible resistance."--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aVisual cultures and German contexts. 606 $aArt$xPolitical aspects$zGermany 606 $aDissident art$zGermany 615 0$aArt$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aDissident art 676 $a700.943 702 $aBarnstone$b Deborah Ascher 702 $aOtto$b Elizabeth$f1970- 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910511679503321 996 $aArt and resistance in Germany$92549057 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04545nam 2200505 450 001 9910793021303321 005 20230814224232.0 010 $a90-04-28089-8 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004280892 035 $a(CKB)4100000006372125 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5554923 035 $a 2018029155 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004280892 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000006372125 100 $a20180616d2018 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aCrisis, movement, strategy$b[e-book] $ethe Greek experience /$fedited by Panagiotis Sotiris 210 1$aLeiden ;$aBoston :$cBrill,$d[2018] 215 $a1 online resource (314 pages) 225 0 $aHistorical materialism book series,$x1570-1522 ;$vv. 163 311 $a90-04-29134-2 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tFront Matter --$tCopyright Page --$tNotes on Contributors --$tIntroduction /$rPanagiotis Sotiris --$tThe Greek Crisis: Causes and Alternative Strategies /$rStavros Mavroudeas --$tImperialist Exploitation and Crisis of the Greek Economy: a Study /$rGeorge Economakis , Maria Markaki , George Androulakis and Alexios Anastasiadis --$tThe Class Dimension of the Greek Public Debt Crisis /$rIoannis Zisimopoulos and George Economakis --$tConsolidation of Authoritarian Rule in the EU: the Parallel Processes of the Troika?s Emergence and the Economic Governance Reforms /$rYiorgos Vassalos --$tLabour under Attack during the Period of Crisis and Austerity /$rGiannis Kouzis --$t?First Comes Indignation, Then Rebellion, Then We Shall See?: Political Crisis, Popular Perception of Politics and Transformation of Consciousness amid the Rebellious Cycle of 2010?11 in Greece /$rEirini Gaitanou --$tReshaping Political Cultures: the ?Squares Movement? and Its Impact /$rAngelos Kontogiannis-Mandros --$tPolitical Crisis, Crisis of Hegemony and the Rise of Golden Dawn /$rDespina Paraskeva-Veloudogianni --$tThe Crisis and the Strategy of the Greek Ruling Class /$rSpyros Sakellaropoulos --$tFrom Resistance to Transitional Programme: the Strange Rise of the Radical Left in Greece /$rChristos Laskos and Euclid Tsakalotos --$tIn Search of the Modern Prince: a Critical Absence Reconfirmed through the Greek Experience /$rAlexandros Chrysis --$tFrom Resistance to Hegemony: the Struggle against Austerity and the Need for a New Historical Bloc /$rPanagiotis Sotiris --$tBack Matter --$tIndex. 330 $aIn 2010 Greece entered a period of extreme austerity measures, but also of intense struggles and protests. Social and political crisis led to tectonic shifts in the political landscape and the rise to power of SYRIZA. However, despite the impressive expression of resistance in the 2015 referendum, the EU-IMF-ECB ?Troika? managed to impose the continuation of the same politics of austerity, privatisations, and neoliberal reforms. This social and political sequence poses important theoretical and analytical questions regarding capitalist crisis, public debt, European integration, political crisis, the new forms of protest and social movements, and the rise of neo-fascist parties. It also brings forward all the open questions regarding radical left-wing strategy today. The contributions in this volume attempt from different perspectives to deal with some of these theoretical and strategic questions using the Greek experience as a case study.
