In Exile Memories and the Dutch Revolt , Johannes Müller shows how migrants and their descendants in the Dutch Republic, England and Germany cultivated their Netherlandish heritage for more than 200 years. Memories of war and persecution shaped new religious and political identities that combined images of suffering and heroism and served as foundational narratives of newcomers. Exposing the underlying narrative structures of early modern exile memories, this volume shows how stories about the Dutch Revolt allowed migrants to participate in their host societies rather than producing a closed and exclusive diaspora. While narratives of religious persecution attracted non-migrants as well, exile networks were able to connect newcomers and established residents. 410 0$aStudies in medieval and Reformation traditions ;$vVolume 199. 606 $aMemory$xSocial aspects$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aMemory$xSocial aspects$zEngland$xHistory 606 $aDutch$xMigrations$xHistory 606 $aDutch$zEngland$zEthnic identity$xHistory 606 $aDutch$zGermany$xEthnic identity$xHistory 606 $aExiles$zEngland$xHistory 606 $aExiles$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aWar and society$zNetherlands$xHistory 607 $aNetherlands$xHistory$yEighty Years' War, 1568-1648$xSocial aspects 607 $aNetherlands$xHistory$yEighty Years' War, 1568-1648$xRefugees 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMemory$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aMemory$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aDutch$xMigrations$xHistory. 615 0$aDutch$xHistory. 615 0$aDutch$xEthnic identity$xHistory. 615 0$aExiles$xHistory. 615 0$aExiles$xHistory. 615 0$aWar and society$xHistory. 676 $a949.2/03 700 $aMu?ller$b Johannes$g(Johannes M.),$f1980-$01066535 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910511418003321 996 $aExile memories and the Dutch revolt$92549374 997 $aUNINA
