In contrast to the internment camps and compulsory military service that characterized the Japanese American wartime experience, this book traces the rise to power of Shind? Renmei, an ultranationalist secret society that formed in response to the anti-Japanese measures enacted under Getulio Vargas' Estado Novo. Based in São Paulo, the group used terrorism, propaganda campaigns, and conspiracy theories to violently enforce its narrative of Japan's victory. These traumatic events nevertheless brought about a permanent transformation in the Japanese Brazilian community from a largely insular colony with close ties to its imperial homeland to its new identity as an ethnic minority in postwar Brazil's fraught racialdemocracy. 410 0$aHistorical and Cultural Interconnections between Latin America and Asia,$x2946-4285 606 $aJournalism 606 $aLatin America$xHistory 606 $aEthnology$zLatin America 606 $aCulture 606 $aLatin American literature 606 $aJapan$xHistory 606 $aJournalism 606 $aLatin American History 606 $aLatin American Culture 606 $aLatin American/Caribbean Literature 606 $aHistory of Japan 615 0$aJournalism. 615 0$aLatin America$xHistory. 615 0$aEthnology 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aLatin American literature. 615 0$aJapan$xHistory. 615 14$aJournalism. 615 24$aLatin American History. 615 24$aLatin American Culture. 615 24$aLatin American/Caribbean Literature. 615 24$aHistory of Japan. 676 $a981.00495 676 $a305.8956081 700 $aMorais$b Fernando$0704268 702 $aJacobowitz$b Seth 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910510553003321 996 $aDirty Hearts$92550099 997 $aUNINA
