Through architecture and urban forms confrontations were crystallized, cultural identities were defined, and social engineering programs were shaped and challenged. In this pathbreaking book, Zeynep Celik reads the city of Algiers as the site of social, political, and cultural conflicts during the 132 years of French occupation and argues that architecture and urban forms are integral components of the colonial discourse. -- Algiers' city planning, based on what Celik calls "the trial-and-error" model of French colonial urbanism, included the fragmentation of the casbah, ambitious Beaux Arts schemes to create European forms of housing, master plans inspired by high modernism, and comprehensive regional plans. Eventually a dramatic housing shortage led all planning efforts to be centered on the construction of large-scale residential enclaves. French architects based their designs for domestic space on the concept of the "traditional house," itself an interdisciplinary colonial concept intertwined with the discourse on Algerian women. Housing also offered the French colonizers a powerful presence in a country where periodic resistance to the occupation eventually culminated in a seven-year war of liberation and an end to French rule."$uhttp://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/ucal041/96037606.html. 410 $aACLS Fellows' Publications. 517 $aUrban forms and colonial confrontations 606 $aArchitecture and society$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture, French$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture, Colonial$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture, Domestic$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture and society$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture, French$zAlgiers$zAlgeria 606 $aArchitecture, Colonial$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture, Domestic$zAlgeria$zAlgiers 606 $aArchitecture$2HILCC 606 $aArt, Architecture & Applied Arts$2HILCC 607 $aAlgiers (Algeria)$xBuildings, structures, etc 615 0$aArchitecture and society 615 0$aArchitecture, French 615 0$aArchitecture, Colonial 615 0$aArchitecture, Domestic 615 0$aArchitecture and society 615 0$aArchitecture, French 615 0$aArchitecture, Colonial 615 0$aArchitecture, Domestic 615 7$aArchitecture 615 7$aArt, Architecture & Applied Arts 676 $a720/.965/3 700 $aC?elik$b Zeynep$0645242 702 $aðCelik$b Zeynep 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bMH-FA 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910496137403321 996 $aUrban forms and colonial confrontations$92862651 997 $aUNINA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress
