Is there any evolutionary basis for the scarcity of female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies? According to Kingsley Browne, the answer may be yes. Biology at Work brings an evolutionary perspective to bear on issues of women in the workplace: the "glass ceiling," the "gender gap" in pay, sexual harassment, and occupational segregation. While acknowledging the role of discrimination and sexist socialization, Browne suggests that until we factor real biological differences between men and women into the equation, the explanation remains incomplete. Browne looks at behavioral differences between men and women as products of different evolutionary pressures facing them throughout human history. Women's biological investment in their offspring has led them to be on average more nurturing and risk averse, and to value relationships over competition. Men have been biologically rewarded, over human history, for displays of strength and skill, risk taking, and status acquisition. These behavioral differences have numerous workplace consequences. Not surprisingly, sex differences in the drive for status lead to sex differences in the achievement of status. Browne argues that decision makers should recognize that policies based on the assumption of a single androgynous human nature are unlikely to be successful. Simply removing barriers to inequality will not achieve equality, as women and men typically value different things in the workplace and will make different workplace choices based on their different preferences. Rather than simply putting forward the "nature" side of the debate, Browne suggests that dichotomies such as nature/nurture have impeded our understanding of the origins of human behavior. Through evolutionary biology we can understand not only how natural selection has created predispositions toward certain types of behavior but also how the social environment interacts with these predispositions to produce observed behavioral patterns. 410 0$aRutgers series in human evolution. 606 $aSex differences (Psychology) 606 $aSexual division of labor 606 $aSex differences 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSex differences (Psychology) 615 0$aSexual division of labor. 615 0$aSex differences. 676 $a305.3 700 $aBrowne$b Kingsley$01044150 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910454383603321 996 $aBiology at work$92469607 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02220nam 2200565 450 001 9910160291303321 005 20170121153619.0 010 $a9781522517993$belectronic 010 $z9781522517986$bprint 024 7 $a10.4018/978-1-5225-1798-6 035 $a(CKB)3710000001022315 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4789093 035 $a(CaBNVSL)gtp00566750 035 $a(OCoLC)969706594 035 $a(IGIG)00165957 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000001022315 100 $a20170117d2017 fy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||m|||a 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aMaterials science and engineering $econcepts, methodologies, tools, and applications /$fInformation Resources Management Association, editor 210 1$aHershey, PA :$cEngineering Science Reference,$d[2017] 210 4$d©2017 215 $aPDFs (1,804 pages) $cillustrations 311 $a1-5225-1798-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aFundamental concepts and theories -- Development and design methodologies -- Tools and technologies -- Utilization and applications -- Organizational and social implications -- Emerging technologies. 330 3 $a"This book is a compendium of the latest academic material on investigations, technologies, and techniques pertaining to analyzing the synthesis and design of new materials. 606 $aHistory 606 $acoopération franco-québécoise 606 $adéveloppement 606 $acolloque 606 $adémographie 606 $alinguistique 606 $ahistoire 606 $adiplomatie 610 $acoopération franco-québécoise 610 $adéveloppement 610 $acolloque 610 $adémographie 610 $alinguistique 610 $ahistoire 610 $adiplomatie 615 4$aHistory 615 4$acoopération franco-québécoise 615 4$adéveloppement 615 4$acolloque 615 4$adémographie 615 4$alinguistique 615 4$ahistoire 615 4$adiplomatie 700 $aAllard$b Michel$0627148 701 $aAnsart$b Pierre$0125057 701 $aA?Cloque$b Philippe$01311105 701 $aBeaudry$b Lucille$0972187 701 $aBergeron$b Philippe$01311106 701 $aBideau$b Alain$0254608 701 $aBouchard$b Gérard$0567503 701 $aChampagne$b Michèle$01311107 701 $aDartiguenave$b Michèle$01311108 701 $aDe Cossé-Brissac$b Marie-Pierre$01311109 701 $aDorion$b Gilles$0322392 701 $aEmeri$b Claude$0245880 701 $aFournier$b Marcel$0144177 701 $aGoy$b Joseph$0211310 701 $aGuillaume$b Pierre$0408824 701 $aHoudebine$b Anne-Marie$01295719 701 $aLatouche$b Daniel$0300201 701 $aLautman$b Jacques$01306564 701 $aLegaré$b Anne$01182138 701 $aLeger$b Jean-Marc$01163894 701 $aMarmler$b Jean$01311110 701 $aMevellec$b Pierre$01311111 701 $aMoreau$b Michel$0386473 701 $aNadeau$b Serge$01311112 701 $aPelletier$b Jean$0416914 701 $aPerusse$b Richard$01311113 701 $aPhilip$b Christian$0248454 701 $aPortes$b Jacques$0508952 701 $aResch$b Yannick$0188954 701 $aSimard$b Sylvain$01311114 701 $aVillard$b Christophe$01311115 701 $aWallot$b Jean-Pierre$01283762 701 $aPortes$b Jacques$0508952 701 $aSimard$b Sylvain$01311114 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910496017603321 996 $aLa coopération universitaire entre la France et le Québec$93030017 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01021nas 22003733a 450 001 996214898203316 005 20221206105446.0 011 $a1548-8446 035 $a(OCoLC)54497457 035 $a(CKB)954925522723 035 $a(CONSER)--2004212159 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2192412-0 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925522723 100 $a20040227a19769999 s-- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aFisheries 210 $aBethesda, MD $cAmerican Fisheries Society 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 $a0363-2415 606 $aFishery management$vPeriodicals 606 $aFishery management$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00926228 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aFishery management 615 7$aFishery management. 676 $a338.3 712 02$aAmerican Fisheries Society. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a996214898203316 996 $aFisheries$91131587 997 $aUNISA
