And as Helen Solterer contends, in French medieval culture the representation of women exemplified the use of injurious language. Solterer investigates the debates over women between masters and their disciples. Across a broad range of Old French literature to the early modern Querelle des femmes, she shows how the figure of the female respondent became an instrument for disputing the dominant models of representing women. The female respondent exploited the criterion of injurious language that so preoccupied medieval masters, and she charged master poets ethically and legally with libel. Solterer's work thus illuminates an early, decisive chapter in the history of defamation. 410 0$aACLS Fellows' Publications. 517 3 $aDisputing women in French medieval culture 606 $aFrench literature$yTo 1500$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWomen$zFrance$xHistory$yMiddle Ages, 500-1500 606 $aWomen and literature$zFrance$xHistory 606 $aQuarreling in literature 606 $aLaw and literature 606 $aRhetoric, Medieval 606 $aDialectic 606 $aFrench literature$xHistory and criticism$yTo 1500$zFrance 606 $aWomen and literature$xHistory$yTo 1500$zFrance 606 $aWomen$xHistory$yMiddle Ages, 500-1500 606 $aLaw and literature$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aQuarreling in literature 606 $aRhetoric, Medieval 606 $aDialectic 607 $aFrance$xHistory$yMedieval period, 987-1515 615 0$aFrench literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWomen$xHistory 615 0$aWomen and literature$xHistory. 615 0$aQuarreling in literature. 615 00$aLaw and literature. 615 0$aRhetoric, Medieval. 615 0$aDialectic. 615 0$aFrench literature$xHistory and criticism 615 0$aWomen and literature$xHistory 615 0$aWomen$xHistory 615 0$aLaw and literature$xHistory 615 0$aQuarreling in literature 615 0$aRhetoric, Medieval 615 0$aDialectic 676 $a840.9/352042/0902 700 $aSolterer$b Helen$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01015477 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910495960303321 996 $aThe Master and Minerva$92371549 997 $aUNINA
