From the time of early Jesuit missionaries to the late nineteenth century, Devens brings Ojibwa, Cree, and Montagnais-Naskapi women of the Upper Great Lakes region to the fore. Far from being passive observers without regard for status and autonomy, these women were pivotal in their own communities and active in shaping the encounter between Native American and white civilizations. While women's voices have been silenced in most accounts, their actions preserved in missionary letters and reports indicate the vital part women played during centuries of conflict. In contrast to some Indian men who accepted the missionaries' religious and secular teachings as useful tools for dealing with whites, many Indian women felt a strong threat to their ways of life and beliefs. Women endured torture and hardship, and even torched missionaries' homes in an attempt to reassert control over their lives. Devens demonstrates that gender conflicts in Native American communities, which anthropologists considered to be "aboriginal," resulted in large part from women's and men's divergence over the acceptance of missionaries and their message. This book's perspective is unique in its focus on Native American women who acted to preserve their culture. In acknowledging these women as historically significant actors, Devens has written a work for every scholar and student seeking a more inclusive understanding of the North American past. 606 $aIndian women$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aIndian women$zGreat Lakes Region 606 $aWomen$zGreat Lakes Region$xHistory 606 $aSex role$zGreat Lakes Region$xHistory 606 $aIndians of North America$xMissions$zGreat Lakes Region 606 $aWomen$zCanada, Eastern$xHistory 606 $aSex role$zCanada, Eastern$xHistory 606 $aIndians of North America$xMissions$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aIndian women$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aWomen$zGreat Lakes Region (North America)$xHistory 606 $aSex role$zGreat Lakes Region (North America)$xHistory 606 $aIndians of North America$xMissions$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aIndian women$xHistory$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aWomen$xHistory$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aSex role$xMissions$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aIndians of North America$xHistory$zGreat Lakes Region (North America) 606 $aIndian women$xHistory$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aWomen$xMissions$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aSex role$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aIndians of North America$zCanada, Eastern 606 $aGender & Ethnic Studies$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aEthnic & Race Studies$2HILCC 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aIndian women 615 0$aIndian women 615 0$aWomen$xHistory. 615 0$aSex role$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians of North America$xMissions 615 0$aWomen$xHistory. 615 0$aSex role$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians of North America$xMissions 615 0$aIndian women 615 0$aWomen$xHistory. 615 0$aSex role$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians of North America$xMissions 615 0$aIndian women$xHistory 615 0$aWomen$xHistory 615 0$aSex role$xMissions 615 0$aIndians of North America$xHistory 615 0$aIndian women$xHistory 615 0$aWomen$xMissions 615 0$aSex role 615 0$aIndians of North America 615 7$aGender & Ethnic Studies 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aEthnic & Race Studies 676 $a977/.00497/082 700 $aDevens$b Carol$01233551 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bSLR 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910495867303321 996 $aCountering colonization$92865099 997 $aUNINA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress
