The chapters examine the symbolic role of the site in England's Christian history, the London book trade based in and around St Paul's, the place of St Paul's commercial indoor playhouse within the performance culture of sixteenth and seventeenth-century London, and the intersection of religion and politics through events such as civic ceremonies and occasional sermons. Through the organising theme of culture, the authors demonstrate how the site, as well as the people and trades occupying the precinct, can be positioned within wider fields of representations, practices, and social networks. A focus on St Paul's is therefore about more than just the specific site on Ludgate Hill: it is about those practices and representations connected to it, which either extended beyond or originated in places other than the Cathedral environs. This points to the range of localised, regional, national, and transnational relationships in which the precinct and its people were situated and to which they contributed. 410 0$aEarly Modern Literature in History,$x2634-5927 606 $aEuropean literature$yRenaissance, 1450-1600 606 $aLiterature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLiterature, Medieval 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aChurch history 606 $aEarly Modern and Renaissance Literature 606 $aLiterary History 606 $aMedieval Literature 606 $aCultural History 606 $aChurch History 615 0$aEuropean literature 615 0$aLiterature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aLiterature, Medieval. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 0$aChurch history. 615 14$aEarly Modern and Renaissance Literature. 615 24$aLiterary History. 615 24$aMedieval Literature. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aChurch History. 676 $a001.1 676 $a942.12 702 $aAltman$b Shanyn 702 $aBuckner$b Jonathan 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910495195803321 996 $aOld St Paul's and Culture$92556286 997 $aUNINA
