He completed thirteen exploratory journeys in northern Mozambique, including the first exploration of the Makua and Lomwe countries between Mozambique Island and Lake Malawi. This recreation of the book, which he never published, makes available for the first time a large body of information on the peoples of northern Mozambique (a region still little researched), on the history of the slave trade in the western Indian Ocean and on the expansion of Portuguese rule and the resistance to it by powerful local communities. The Introduction includes the first ever biographical study of O?Neill and his contribution to African exploration. 410 0$aEuropean expansion and indigenous response ;$vVolume 18. 606 $aNatural history$zMozambique$vSources 606 $aEthnology$zMozambique$vSources 606 $aExplorers$zGreat Britain$vBiography 606 $aDiplomats$zGreat Britain$vBiography 606 $aSlave trade$zIndian Ocean Region 607 $aMozambique$xDiscovery and exploration$xEnglish$vSources 607 $aMozambique$xHistory$y1698-1891$vSources 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNatural history 615 0$aEthnology 615 0$aExplorers 615 0$aDiplomats 615 0$aSlave trade 676 $a967.9/02 700 $aPalmer$b Hilary C.$01047273 702 $aNewitt$b Malyn D.
