In nineteenth-century Britain, however, archaeology was enmeshed with questions of biblical authority and so with religious as well as narrowly scholarly concerns. In unearthing the cities of the Eastern Mediterranean, travellers, archaeologists and their popularisers transformed thinking on the truth of Christianity and its place in modern cities. This happened at a time when anxieties over the unprecedented rate of urbanisation in Britain coincided with critical challenges to biblical truth. In this context, cities from Jerusalem to Rome became contested models for the adaptation of Christianity to modern urban life. Using sites from across the biblical world, this book evokes the appeal of the ancient city to diverse groups of British Protestants in their arguments with one another and with their secular and Catholic rivals about the vitality of their faith in urban Britain. 606 $aArchaeology$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aMiddle East$xAntiquities 615 0$aArchaeology$xHistory 676 $a220.9/3094109034 702 $aGange$b David 702 $aLedger-Lomas$b Michael 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464657303321 996 $aCities of God$92453438 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01974nam 2200601 450 001 9910493194803321 005 20200711011354.0 035 $a(CKB)3710000000840601 035 $a(EBL)4089581 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4089581 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000840601 100 $a20161017h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aStaying at home $eidentities, memories and social networks of Kazakhstani Germans /$fRita Sanders 210 1$aNew York, New York ;$aOxford, [England] :$cBerghahn Books,$d2016. 210 4$dİ2016 215 $a1 online resource (270 p.) 225 1 $aIntegration and Conflict Studies 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-78533-192-2 311 $a1-78533-193-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 410 0$aIntegration and conflict studies. 606 $aGermans$zKazakhstan$xEthnic identity 606 $aGermans$zKazakhstan$xSocial conditions 606 $aCollective memory$zKazakhstan 606 $aTransnationalism$xSocial aspects$zKazakhstan 606 $aSocial networks$zKazakhstan 606 $aSocial networks$zGermany 607 $aKazakhstan$xEthnic relations 607 $aKazakhstan$xEmigration and immigration 607 $aKazakhstan$xRelations$zGermany 607 $aGermany$xRelations$zKazakhstan 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGermans$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aGermans$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aCollective memory 615 0$aTransnationalism$xSocial aspects 615 0$aSocial networks 615 0$aSocial networks 676 $a305.8310584 700 $aSanders$b Rita$01042993 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910493194803321 996 $aStaying at home$92467663 997 $aUNINA
