During that time, the couple experienced radical upheavals in the Quetico-Superior region, including the cutting of white and red pine forests, the creation of Indian reserves/reservations and conservation areas, and the rise of towns, tourism, and mining. With broad geographical sweep, historical significance, and biographical depth, Making the Carry tells their story, overlooked for far too long. John Linklater, a legendary "Indian game warden" and woodsman without peer, was also the bearer of traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous heritage, both of which he was deeply committed to teaching others. He was sought by professors, newspaper reporters, museum personnel, and conservationists-among them Sigurd Olson, who considered Linklater a mentor. Tchi-Ki-Wis, an extraordinary craftswoman, made a sweeping array of necessary yet beautiful objects, from sled dog harnesses to moose calls to birch bark canoes. She was an expert weaver of large Anishinaabeg cedar bark mats with complicated geometric designs, a virtually lost art. Making the Carry traces the routes by which the couple came to live on Basswood Lake on the international border. John's Me?tis ancestors with deep Hudson's Bay Company roots originally came from Orkney Islands, Scotland, by way of Hudson Bay and Red River, or what is now Winnipeg. His family lived in Manitoba, northwest Ontario, northern Minnesota, and, in the case of John and Tchi-Ki-Wis, on Isle Royale. A journey through little-known Canadian history, the book provides an intimate portrait of Me?tis people. Complete with rarely seen photographs of activities from dog mushing to guiding to lumbering, as well as of many objects made by Tchi-Ki-Wis, such as canoes, moccasins, and cedar mats, Making the Carry is a window on a traditional way of life and a restoration of two fascinating Indigenous people to their rightful place in our collective past"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aMe?tis$zMinnesota$vBiography 606 $aMe?tis$zOntario$vBiography 606 $aOjibwa women$zMinnesota$vBiography 606 $aOjibwa women$zOntario$vBiography 606 $aCanoes and canoeing$zBasswood Lake (Minn. and Ont.) 606 $aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Cultural, Ethnic & Regional / Indigenous$2bisacsh 606 $aHISTORY / United States / State & Local / Midwest (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI)$2bisacsh 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMe?tis 615 0$aMe?tis 615 0$aOjibwa women 615 0$aOjibwa women 615 0$aCanoes and canoeing 615 7$aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Cultural, Ethnic & Regional / Indigenous 615 7$aHISTORY / United States / State & Local / Midwest (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI) 676 $a971.004/97 676 $aB 686 $aBIO028000$aHIS036090$2bisacsh 700 $aCochrane$b Timothy$01740358 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 912 $a9910860888603321 996 $aMaking the Carry$94166019 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01516nas 2200433- 450 001 9910488733103321 005 20250121210922.0 035 $a(OCoLC)1193997430 035 $a(CKB)5590000000474147 035 $a(CONSER)--2020203072 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB3114146-8 035 $a(EXLCZ)995590000000474147 100 $a20200909a20219999 --- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aJournal of statistics and data science education /$fan official journal of the of the American Statistical Association 210 1$a[Philadelphia, PA] :$cTaylor & Francis Group,$d2021- 215 $a1 online resource (volumes) 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a2693-9169 517 1 $aJSDSE 517 1 $aJournal of the of the American Statistical Association 531 0 $aJ. stat. data sci. educ. 606 $aStatistics$xStudy and teaching$vPeriodicals 606 $aStatistics$xStudy and teaching$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01132135 606 $aStatistique$xÉtude et enseignement$vPériodiques 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aStatistics$xStudy and teaching 615 7$aStatistics$xStudy and teaching. 615 6$aStatistique$xÉtude et enseignement 676 $a519.5 712 02$aAmerican Statistical Association, 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910488733103321 996 $aJournal of statistics and data science education$92580094 997 $aUNINA
