International Sample Loan Loss Measures 327 $a7. International Sample: Proxy Measures of (near) Failure 330 3 $aWe study a banking model in which banks invest in a riskless asset and compete in both deposit and risky loan markets. The model predicts that as competition increases, both loans and assets increase; however, the effect on the loans-to-assets ratio is ambiguous. Similarly, as competition increases, the probability of bank failure can either increase or decrease. We explore these predictions empirically using a cross-sectional sample of 2,500 U.S. banks in 2003, and a panel data set of about 2600 banks in 134 non-industrialized countries for the period 1993-2004. With both samples, we find that banks' probability of failure is negatively and significantly related to measures of competition, and that the loan-to-asset ratio is positively and significantly related to measures of competition. Furthermore, several loan loss measures commonly employed in the literature are negatively and significantly related to measures of bank competition. Thus, there is no evidence of a trade-off between bank competition and stability, and bank competition seems to foster banks' willingness to lend. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. the post-conference proceedings of the First European Workshop on Biometrics and Identity Management, BIOID 2008, held in Roskilde, Denmark, during May 7-9, 2008. The 23 regular papers presented were carefully selected from numerous submissions. They cover the following topics: biometric data quality; biometrical templates - face recognition; biometrical templates -- other modalities; biometric attacks and countermeasures; biometric interfaces, and standards and privacy. These papers are presented together with 4 position papers by invited speakers on biometrics and identity management. 410 0$aImage Processing, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, and Graphics,$x3004-9954 ;$v5372 606 $aBiometric identification 606 $aBioinformatics 606 $aComputer vision 606 $aImage processing$xDigital techniques 606 $aInformation storage and retrieval systems 606 $aBiometrics 606 $aComputational and Systems Biology 606 $aComputer Vision 606 $aComputer Imaging, Vision, Pattern Recognition and Graphics 606 $aInformation Storage and Retrieval 615 0$aBiometric identification. 615 0$aBioinformatics. 615 0$aComputer vision. 615 0$aImage processing$xDigital techniques. 615 0$aInformation storage and retrieval systems. 615 14$aBiometrics. 615 24$aComputational and Systems Biology. 615 24$aComputer Vision. 615 24$aComputer Imaging, Vision, Pattern Recognition and Graphics. 615 24$aInformation Storage and Retrieval. 676 $a006 686 $aBIO 110f$2stub 686 $aDAT 750f$2stub 686 $aDAT 760f$2stub 686 $aDAT 770f$2stub 686 $aSS 4800$2rvk 702 $aSchouten$b Ben 702 $aJuul$b Niels$f1958- 702 $aDrygajlo$b Andrzej 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484924303321 996 $aBiometrics and Identity Management$9774112 997 $aUNINA
