These interviews, preserved in the Historical Archives of the European Union at the European University Institute, capture the memories of the MEPs about their own roles and their assessment of what the parliament achieved in developing a European parliamentary democracy in the forty years following the first direct elections. The book offers a taste of the interviews in ten chapters, each of which corresponds to a specific theme presented in the archive: choosing the parliament, working inside the parliament machine, living inside the political groups, playing a part in major moments, influencing and shaping policy, scrutinizing and holding to account, making a mark beyond the EU, communicating the work of the parliament, keeping in touch with national societies, and looking to the future. Alfredo De Feo is a professor at the European College of Parma and Fellow at the European University Institute, Firenze, Italy. He is former Director of the European Parliament and has published widely on EU affairs, including The New Politics of the European Union Budget (with S. Becker and M. Bauer, 2017). Michael Shackleton is Special Professor in European Institutions at the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands, and former Head of the EP Information Office in London, UK. He has published widely on EU affairs, including co-authoring eight editions of The European Parliament. 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in European Union Politics,$x2662-5873 606 $aHistoriography 606 $aEuropean Union 606 $aWorld politics 606 $aLegislative bodies 606 $aPublic policy 606 $aInternational organization 606 $aMemory Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/711010 606 $aEuropean Union Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911140 606 $aPolitical History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911080 606 $aLegislative and Executive Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911240 606 $aPublic Policy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911060 606 $aInternational Organization$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/912010 615 0$aHistoriography. 615 0$aEuropean Union. 615 0$aWorld politics. 615 0$aLegislative bodies. 615 0$aPublic policy. 615 0$aInternational organization. 615 14$aMemory Studies. 615 24$aEuropean Union Politics. 615 24$aPolitical History. 615 24$aLegislative and Executive Politics. 615 24$aPublic Policy. 615 24$aInternational Organization. 676 $a907.2 676 $a341.242224 702 $aDe Feo$b Alfredo$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aShackleton$b Michael$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484851703321 996 $aShaping parliamentary democracy$91766913 997 $aUNINA
