At the same time, it makes clear the profound relationship between early cinema and the construction of a national identity in this important transitional period in the United States. Richard Abel looks closely at sensational melodramas, including westerns (cowboy, cowboy-girl, and Indian pictures), Civil War films (especially girl-spy films), detective films, and animal pictures-all popular genres of the day that have received little critical attention. He simultaneously analyzes film distribution and exhibition practices in order to reconstruct a context for understanding moviegoing at a time when American cities were coming to grips with new groups of immigrants and women working outside the home. Drawing from a wealth of research in archive prints, the trade press, fan magazines, newspaper advertising, reviews, and syndicated columns-the latter of which highlight the importance of the emerging star system-Abel sheds new light on the history of the film industry, on working-class and immigrant culture at the turn of the century, and on the process of imaging a national community. 517 3 $aImagined community of United States cinema 606 $aMotion pictures$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aMotion pictures$xSocial aspects$zUnited States 606 $aNationalism$zUnited States 610 $a1910s. 610 $aamerican cinema. 610 $aamerican history. 610 $aamericanizing film. 610 $aanimal films. 610 $aanthropologists. 610 $acinema studies. 610 $acivil war films. 610 $acritical analysis. 610 $adetective films. 610 $aearly cinema. 610 $afilm distribution. 610 $afilm historians. 610 $afilm industry. 610 $afilm scholars. 610 $afilm studies. 610 $aimmigrant culture. 610 $amovie audiences. 610 $amoviegoing. 610 $anational identity. 610 $anonfiction study. 610 $apopular film genres. 610 $asensational melodramas. 610 $asociologists. 610 $aunited states. 610 $awesterns. 610 $aworking class culture. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xHistory. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xSocial aspects 615 0$aNationalism 676 $a791.430973 700 $aAbel$b Richard$f1941-$0237554 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782201003321 996 $aAmericanizing the movies and "movie-mad" audiences, 1910-1914$91684991 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01328nas 2200397-a 450 001 9910557199003321 005 20240413014147.0 035 $a(CKB)1000000000438856 035 $a(CONSER)--2008201894 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000438856 100 $a20080922a200u9999 -a- - 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aAgro-science 210 $aNsukka $cFaculty of Agriculture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka 215 $a1 online resource 311 08$aPrint version: Agro-science. 1119-7455 (DLC) 2008201894 (OCoLC)255561916 606 $aAgriculture$zTropics$vPeriodicals 606 $aAgriculture$xEnvironmental aspects$zNigeria$vPeriodicals 606 $aAgriculture$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00801355 606 $aAgriculture$xEnvironmental aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00801499 607 $aNigeria$2fast 607 $aTropics$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aAgriculture 615 0$aAgriculture$xEnvironmental aspects 615 7$aAgriculture. 615 7$aAgriculture$xEnvironmental aspects. 712 02$aUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka.$bFaculty of Agriculture. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910557199003321 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aAgro-science$92826783 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05772nam 22008055 450 001 9910484803903321 005 20251226203414.0 010 $a1-282-29797-X 010 $a9786612297977 010 $a3-642-02998-1 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-642-02998-1 035 $a(CKB)1000000000761220 035 $a(EBL)450853 035 $a(OCoLC)437347189 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000291011 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11219601 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000291011 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10248618 035 $a(PQKB)10405159 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-642-02998-1 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC450853 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6413347 035 $a(PPN)136310702 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000761220 100 $a20100301d2009 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aCase-Based Reasoning Research and Development $e8th International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning, ICCBR 2009 Seattle, WA, USA, July 20-23, 2009 Proceedings /$fedited by Lorraine McGinty, David C.
