Surveying the nuanced implications of the film noir genre, Harry Kuoshu argues that global neo noir maintains a mediascape of references, borrowings, and re-workings and explores various social and cultural issues that constitute this Chinese episode of neo noir. Combining literary explorations of carnival, postmodernism, and post-socialism, Kuoshu advocates for neo noir as a cultural phenomenon that connects filmmakers, film critics, and film audiences rather than an industrial genre. Harry H. Kuoshu is Herring Endowed Chair in Asian Studies and Film Studies at Furman University, USA, where he teaches courses on Chinese film, literature, culture and language. In addition to scholarly articles, he is the author of Lightness of Being in China (1999), Celluloid China (2002), and Metro Movies: Cinematic Urbanism in Post-Mao China (2011). 410 0$aChinese Literature and Culture in the World,$x2945-7262 606 $aOriental literature 606 $aMotion pictures$zAsia 606 $aCulture$xStudy and teaching 606 $aLiterature$xPhilosophy 606 $aMotion pictures 606 $aAsian Literature 606 $aAsian Film and TV 606 $aCultural Theory 606 $aLiterary Theory 606 $aFilm Theory 606 $aClose Readings in Film and TV 615 0$aOriental literature. 615 0$aMotion pictures 615 0$aCulture$xStudy and teaching. 615 0$aLiterature$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aMotion pictures. 615 14$aAsian Literature. 615 24$aAsian Film and TV. 615 24$aCultural Theory. 615 24$aLiterary Theory. 615 24$aFilm Theory. 615 24$aClose Readings in Film and TV. 676 $a809.895 676 $a791.43655 700 $aKuoshu$b Harry H.$f1955-$0849331 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484671503321 996 $aCraziness and Carnival in Neo-Noir Chinese Cinema$91896829 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02839oas 2201165 a 450 001 9910446358303321 005 20260120213013.0 011 $a1938-808X 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2025367-9 035 $a(DE-599)2025367-9 035 $a(OCoLC)44914595 035 $a(CONSER) 2007215013 035 $a(CKB)954925588340 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925588340 100 $a20000831a19899999 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAcademic medicine 210 $a[Philadelphia, Pa.] $cHanley & Belfus 210 2 $aHagerstown, Md. $cLippincott Williams & Wilkins 210 3 $a[Oxford] $cOxford University Press 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a1040-2446 531 0 $aAcad. med. 606 $aMedical education$vPeriodicals 606 $aMedicine$vPeriodicals 606 $aEducation, Medical 606 $aEnseignement me?dical$vPe?riodiques 606 $aMe?decine$vPe?riodiques 606 $aMedical education$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014024 606 $aMedicine$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014893 606 $aGeneeskunde$2gtt 606 $aOnderwijs$2gtt 606 $aEnsenyament de la medicina$2thub 606 $aMedicina$2thub 608 $aPeriodical 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aRevistes electro?niques.$2thub 615 0$aMedical education 615 0$aMedicine 615 2$aEducation, Medical 615 6$aEnseignement me?dical 615 6$aMe?decine 615 7$aMedical education. 615 7$aMedicine. 615 17$aGeneeskunde. 615 17$aOnderwijs. 615 7$aEnsenyament de la medicina. 615 7$aMedicina. 676 $a610/.71/173 712 02$aAssociation of American Medical Colleges. 801 0$bEXW 801 1$bEXW 801 2$bEYM 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bSBH 801 2$bNSD 801 2$bPFM 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWAU 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDKDLA 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bNLE 801 2$bBUF 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bEZC 801 2$bFQM 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bWYU 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bQGK 801 2$bSXB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bYOU 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDLC 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910446358303321 996 $aAcademic medicine$91542136 997 $aUNINA
