It considers the effects their discussions have had on Russia's Antarctic policy and may yet have on Antarctica itself. In particular, it examines the Soviet decision in 1949, in line with the cultural policies of late Stalinism, to revise the traditional view of the expedition in order to claim that it was Russian seamen that first sighted the Antarctic mainland in January 1820; this claim remains the official position in Russia today. The author illustrates, however, that the case for such a claim has never been established, and that attempts to make it damaged the work of successive Russian historians. Providing a timely assessment of Russian historiography of the Bellingshausen expedition and examining the connections between the priority claim and national policy goals, this book represents an important contribution to the history of the Antarctic. . 606 $aRussia$xHistory 606 $aEurope, Eastern$xHistory 606 $aSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aScience$xHistory 606 $aWorld politics 606 $aRussian, Soviet, and East European History 606 $aHistory of Science 606 $aPolitical History 615 0$aRussia$xHistory. 615 0$aEurope, Eastern$xHistory. 615 0$aSoviet Union$xHistory. 615 0$aScience$xHistory. 615 0$aWorld politics. 615 14$aRussian, Soviet, and East European History. 615 24$aHistory of Science. 615 24$aPolitical History. 676 $a526.0979809033 676 $a947.0072 700 $aBulkeley$b Rip$053286 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484534703321 996 $aThe Historiography of the First Russian Antarctic Expedition, 1819-21$91892911 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03467nam 22006614a 450 001 9910961270203321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786612697500 010 $a9781282697508 010 $a1282697501 010 $a9780299229535 010 $a029922953X 035 $a(CKB)2520000000006598 035 $a(OCoLC)608692469 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10370387 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000412783 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11306654 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000412783 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10369447 035 $a(PQKB)10612124 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse12343 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3444976 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10370387 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL269750 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3444976 035 $a(Perlego)4453175 035 $a(EXLCZ)992520000000006598 100 $a20080326d2008 ub 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aBeyond the flesh $eAlexander Blok, Zinaida Gippius, and the Symbolist sublimation of sex /$fJenifer Presto 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aMadison, Wis. $cUniversity of Wisconsin Press$dc2008 215 $a1 online resource (354 p.) 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a9780299229504 311 08$a0299229505 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 251-315) and index. 327 $aIntro -- Contents -- Illustrations -- Acknowledgments -- A Note on Transliteration and Abbreviations -- Introduction Beyond the Flesh: Russian Symbolism and the Sublimation of Sex -- I. Drawing on poetry, plays, short stories, essays, memoirs, and letters, as well as feminist and psychoanalytic theory, Beyond the Flesh documents the often unexpected form that this obsession with gender and the body took in the life and art of two of the most important Russian Symbolists. 606 $aSymbolism (Literary movement)$zRussia 606 $aSublimation (Psychology) in literature 606 $aSex in literature 615 0$aSymbolism (Literary movement) 615 0$aSublimation (Psychology) in literature. 615 0$aSex in literature. 676 $a891.71/3 700 $aPresto$b Jenifer$01806541 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910961270203321 996 $aBeyond the flesh$94355774 997 $aUNINA
