It is based on the author's doctoral research into the attitudes and experiences of the English-speaking background (ESB) partners of non-English-speaking background (NESB) migrants in Sydney, Australia. In particular, it seeks to understand how these English speakers negotiate being in a romantic relationship with someone who has a different first language. It explores how those from an ESB reconcile the negative perspectives of Anglophone culture towards "other" languages, with their desire to be a good partner who respects the linguistic differences in their relationship. The book is organised into six chapters, which move from a focus on the language of the individual, to the languages of the couple, and then to the wider family. The main finding is that although ESB partners had very different beliefs and attitudes towards language learning to their migrant partners, they attempted to compensate for these differences in various ways. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars in the fields of language education, minority languages, and language policy and planning. Hanna Irving Torsh is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Human Sciences at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. She was awarded a Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship in 2012 and contributes to the peer-reviewed sociolinguistic research site, Language on the Move. 410 0$aPalgrave pivot. 606 $aMultilingualism 606 $aIntercultural communication 606 $aLanguage policy 606 $aFamily policy 606 $aSociolinguistics 606 $aLanguage and languages$xStudy and teaching 606 $aMultilingualism 606 $aIntercultural Communication 606 $aLanguage Policy and Planning 606 $aChildren, Youth and Family Policy 606 $aSociolinguistics 606 $aLanguage Education 615 0$aMultilingualism. 615 0$aIntercultural communication. 615 0$aLanguage policy. 615 0$aFamily policy. 615 0$aSociolinguistics. 615 0$aLanguage and languages$xStudy and teaching. 615 14$aMultilingualism. 615 24$aIntercultural Communication. 615 24$aLanguage Policy and Planning. 615 24$aChildren, Youth and Family Policy. 615 24$aSociolinguistics. 615 24$aLanguage Education. 676 $a420.42510994 676 $a306.4460994 700 $aIrving Torsh$b Hanna$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01065170 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910370053803321 996 $aLinguistic Intermarriage in Australia$92543482 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04118nam 22007215 450 001 9910484425303321 005 20200716194515.0 010 $a3-662-49485-X 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-662-49485-1 035 $a(CKB)3710000000718028 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-662-49485-1 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4532457 035 $a(PPN)194075214 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000718028 100 $a20160524d2016 u| 0 101 0 $ager 135 $aurnn|008mamaa 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAngst bewältigen $eSelbsthilfe bei Panik und Agoraphobie /$fvon Sigrun Schmidt-Traub 205 $a6th ed. 2016. 210 1$aBerlin, Heidelberg :$cSpringer Berlin Heidelberg :$cImprint: Springer,$d2016. 215 $a1 online resource (XI, 144 S. 4 Abb.) 300 $a"Mit 4 Abbildungen"--Title page verso. 311 $a3-662-49484-1 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index.
