This collection sets out to provide some answers. The authors in this volume question three ultimately connected assumptions of the philosophy of language. The first assumption relates to the predominant status of referential semantics and its power to explain truth-conditional meaning. This assumption has come under attack by the context thesis and a number of papers pursue the question of whether this is justified. The second assumption gives priority to assertive sentences when considering language use. The context thesis changes our understanding of language use altogether; possible implications from this methodological shift are addressed in this volume. According to the third assumption, philosophical analysis amounts to nothing more than conceptual analysis. The context thesis risks undermining this project. Whether conceptual analysis can still be defended as a methodological tool is discussed in this volume. 410 0$aMouton series in pragmatics ;$vVolume 19. 606 $aContext (Linguistics) 606 $aSemantics 610 $aContext Thesis. 610 $aContextualism. 610 $aPhilosophy of Language. 615 0$aContext (Linguistics) 615 0$aSemantics. 676 $a401/.43 702 $aConrad$b Sarah 702 $aPetrus$b Klaus$f1967- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910795492703321 996 $aMeaning, context and methodology$93857549 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03380nam 2200565 450 001 9910826438303321 005 20170919050038.0 010 $a1-4422-4109-8 035 $a(CKB)3710000000468879 035 $a(EBL)4085931 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4085931 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000468879 100 $a20160126h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 00$aNuclear Scholars Initiative $ea collection of papers from the 2014 Nuclear Scholars Initiative /$feditor, Sarah Minot ; authors, Seongjin James Ahn [and nineteen others] 210 1$aLanham, [Maryland] :$cCenter for Strategic & International Studies :$cRowman & Littlefield,$d2015. 210 4$d©2015 215 $a1 online resource (269 p.) 225 1 $aCSIS Reports 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-4422-4108-X 327 $aNuclear Scholars Initiative ; Contents ; Introduction and Acknowledgments ; U.S.-China Nuclear Dynamics in the Context of a New Model of Major Power Relations ; Expanding the Scope: Setting the Stage for Future U.S.-Russian Arms Control Negotiations ; The Prospects for U.S.-Russian Collaboration after Ukraine ; Bomber Nuclear Culture: On the Cusp of Excellence ; Deception in Covert Nuclear Development ; Rethinking the Origins of North Korea's Nuclear Program ; Don't Make Me a Target: Alliance Management, Threat, and Forward Deployments 327 $aChinese Views of Japanese Nuclear Capabilities and Ambitions Maintaining the Nuclear Security Complex for Non-Stockpile Research and Development as the United States Pursues Global Zero ; China's Modernization: How Improved Technologies Could Enable Changes in Nuclear Policy ; Ghosts of the Nonaligned Past: Debate on U.S. Compliance ; Employment of Hypersonic Glide Vehicles: Proposed Criteria for Use ; A Perfect Record: Assessing Risk and the Human Factor in Avoiding Nuclear Catastrophe ; Improving Nuclear Life Extension Program Management: A B61-12 Case Study 327 $aLiving on the Hedge: A Nuclear Arsenal for an Insecure Japan Bi-/Multilateral Authentication Technology Development Framework for Future Treaty Verification Regimes ; Al Qaeda's Nuclear Ambitions ; Strategic Stability and Tactical Nuclear Weapons in South Asia ; One in a Million, Given the Accident: Assuring Nuclear Weapons Safety ; Evaluating U.S.Policy Options: Up the Savannah River without a Paddle? 330 $aThis volume is a collection of the 2014 papers from the Nuclear Scholars Initiative. 410 0$aCSIS report. 606 $aNuclear weapons$vCongresses 606 $aNuclear weapons$xGovernment policy$vCongresses 606 $aNuclear weapons$xTesting$vCongresses 606 $aNuclear nonproliferation$vCongresses 606 $aDeterrence (Strategy)$vCongresses 615 0$aNuclear weapons 615 0$aNuclear weapons$xGovernment policy 615 0$aNuclear weapons$xTesting 615 0$aNuclear nonproliferation 615 0$aDeterrence (Strategy) 676 $a327.1747 702 $aMinot$b Sarah 702 $aAhn$b Seongjin James 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910826438303321 996 $aNuclear Scholars Initiative$93927783 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04524nam 22006015 450 001 9910484256203321 005 20251202144437.0 010 $a9783030371371 010 $a3030371379 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-030-37137-1 035 $a(CKB)4100000010122016 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6032960 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-030-37137-1 035 $a(Perlego)3480303 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000010122016 100 $a20200129d2020 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe Art of Brasília $e2000-2019 /$fby Sophia Beal 205 $a1st ed. 2020. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer International Publishing :$cImprint: Palgrave Macmillan,$d2020. 215 $a1 online resource (263 pages) 225 1 $aNew Directions in Latino American Cultures,$x2634-520X 311 08$a9783030371364 311 08$a3030371360 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $a1. The city we find here?though certainly not a modernist utopia?is, like the book itself, anything but unsurprising?a reminder that in the history of urban planning, the unintended happens often. Impressively-researched, fresh, and captivating, this book is a brilliant achievement and will appeal to experts and first-time travelers alike.? --Bruno Carvalho, Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Harvard University ?This book is an exemplary piece of research, and singular in that Brasília?s cultural production has not previously been systematically examined. Beal?s study is notable for paying close attention to the importance of popular culture in providing trenchant sociocultural assessments. Her secure grasp of the scope of her material and the quality of her analyses confirm her emerging stature as a majorvoice in contemporary Brazilian cultural studies.? --David William Foster, Regents? Professor of Portuguese and Spanish, Arizona State University People from outside of Brasília often dismiss Brazil?s capital as a cultural wasteland. However, as The Art of Brasília argues, that reputation is outdated. Brasília?s contemporary artists are transforming how people think about the city and how they use its public spaces. These twenty-first-century artists are recasting Brasília as a vibrant city of the arts in which cultural production affirms the creative right to the city of marginalized populations. Brasília?s initial 1960s art was state-sanctioned, carried out mainly by privileged, white men. In contrast, the capital?s contemporary art is marked by its diversity, challenging norms about the types of art that can symbolize the city. This book analyzes prose, poetry, film, cultural journalism, music, photography, graffiti, street theater, and street dance that demystify the capital?s inequities and imagine alternative ways of inhabiting the city. Sophia Beal is Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Minnesota.
