It examines the ways in which the Egyptian nahda discourse with its emphasis on identity, authenticity and renaissance suppressed various forms of cultural and literary creation emerging from the encounter with European genres as well as indigenous popular literary forms and languages. The book explores the multiple and fluid translation practices of this period as a form of ?unauthorized? translation that was not invested in upholding nationalist binaries of originality and imitation. Instead, translators experimented with radical and complex forms of adaptation that turned these binaries upside down. Through a series of close readings of novels published in the periodical The People?s Entertainments, the book explores the nineteenth century literary, intellectual, juridical and economic histories that are constituted through translation, and outlines a comparative method of reading that pays particular attention to the circulation of genre across national borders. 410 0$aLiteratures and Cultures of the Islamic World,$x2945-7068 606 $aLiterature 606 $aLiterature, Modern$x20th century 606 $aAfrican literature 606 $aEuropean literature 606 $aWorld Literature 606 $aTwentieth-Century Literature 606 $aAfrican Literature 606 $aEuropean Literature 615 0$aLiterature. 615 0$aLiterature, Modern$x20th century. 615 0$aAfrican literature. 615 0$aEuropean literature. 615 14$aWorld Literature. 615 24$aTwentieth-Century Literature. 615 24$aAfrican Literature. 615 24$aEuropean Literature. 676 $a809 676 $a892.73609962 700 $aSelim$b Samah$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0948684 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484081803321 996 $aPopular Fiction, Translation and the Nahda in Egypt$92847652 997 $aUNINA
