La création en 1588 de la Congrégation des Rites et la publication des nouveaux livres liturgiques romains - le Bréviaire, le Missel et le Martyrologe - entraînèrent dans tout le monde catholique un double mouvement de demande d?approbation des rituels et des calendriers propres. Il s?agissait à la fois de se mettre en conformité avec la normativité universaliste de la Curie et de réaffirmer l?irréductibilité des particularismes. Or, dans les pays concernés ici de l?Europe centrale et orientale, le pluralisme religieux juxtaposait à un catholicisme souvent minoritaire au début du xviiesiècle, une adhésion importante, parfois majoritaire, aux différents courants de la Réforme en Hongrie, en Autriche et en Pologne-Lituanie, à l?utraquisme et à l?Unité des Frères issus du hussitisme en Bohême. Dans le Grand-Duché de Lituanie et en Ukraine polonaise avait lieu aussi, non sans conflits et résistances, le passage de l?orthodoxie à l?uniatisme. La mise en perspective de situations impliquant donc une recatholicisation, sous des modalités différentes selon les contextes, avec celles de l?Italie et de l?Espagne apporte de nouveaux éléments de réflexion sur un point central de ces remises en ordre : la notion de patronage sacré.
