Cavell was first introduced to the British public through a series of Foreign Office statements which claimed to establish the ?facts? of her case. Her own voice, along with those of her family, colleagues and friends, were muted, as a monolithic image of a national heroine and martyr emerged. The book identifies two main areas of tension in her commemoration: firstly, the contrast between complexity of her own behaviour and motivations and the simplicity of the ?Cavell Legend? that was constructed around her; and, secondly, the mismatch between the attempts of individuals and professional organisations to commemorate her life and work, and the public construction of a ?heroine? who could be of value to the nation state. 606 $aSocial history 606 $aGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aMilitary history 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aFeminism 606 $aFeminist theory 606 $aSocial History 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland 606 $aMilitary History 606 $aCultural History 606 $aFeminism and Feminist Theory 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aGreat Britain$xHistory. 615 0$aMilitary history. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 0$aFeminism. 615 0$aFeminist theory. 615 14$aSocial History. 615 24$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aMilitary History. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aFeminism and Feminist Theory. 676 $a610.73069 700 $aHallett$b Christine E$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0945624 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483233003321 996 $aEdith Cavell and her Legend$92849527 997 $aUNINA
