Children's literature emerged as dizzying numbers of new species flooded into Britain with scientific expeditions, from giraffes and hippopotami to kangaroos, wombats, platypuses or sloths. As the book argues, late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian children's writers took part in the urge for mass education and presented the world and its curious creatures to children, often borrowing from their museum culture and its objects to map out that world. This original exploration illuminates how children's literature dealt with the new ordering of the world, offering a unique viewpoint on the construction of science in the long nineteenth century. Laurence Talairach is Professor of English at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès and associate researcher at the Alexandre Koyré Centre for the History of Science and Technology, France. Her research specialises in the interrelations between nineteenth-century literature, medicine and science. 410 0$aPalgrave Studies in Animals and Literature,$x2634-6346 606 $aEcocriticism 606 $aLiterature, Modern$y19th century 606 $aChildren's literature 606 $aAnimal welfare$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aScience$xHistory 606 $aCulture$xStudy and teaching 606 $aEcocriticism 606 $aNineteenth-Century Literature 606 $aChildren's Literature 606 $aAnimal Ethics 606 $aHistory of Science 606 $aVisual Culture 615 0$aEcocriticism. 615 0$aLiterature, Modern 615 0$aChildren's literature. 615 0$aAnimal welfare$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aScience$xHistory. 615 0$aCulture$xStudy and teaching. 615 14$aEcocriticism. 615 24$aNineteenth-Century Literature. 615 24$aChildren's Literature. 615 24$aAnimal Ethics. 615 24$aHistory of Science. 615 24$aVisual Culture. 676 $a809.93362 676 $a820.9362 700 $aTalairach-Vielmas$b Laurence$0608399 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483227203321 996 $aAnimals, museum culture and children's literature in Nineteenth-Century Britain$92585775 997 $aUNINA
